I bought a TV stand/entertainment center a couple of days ago and I put my PS3 in it along with my home theater deck. Prior to that, my TV had just been sitting on my desk and the PS3 was standing upright somewhere near it.

I placed my hand on the bottom side of the glass shelf that the PS3 is on last night and noticed that the glass was pretty hot. I wasn't sure if that was just how hot the PS3 gets, or if it had anything to do with the PS3 being in an enclosed space. Anyone know if putting a PS3 where I put it can lead to overheating problems? Or should I not worry about it? If it's gonna lead to overheating, I'm going to just take the PS3 out and leave it open air like it was before I bought this stand. I just got my PS3 a week ago, and I don't have an extended warranty lol.

I'm putting a picture up so you guys have an idea of what I'm talking about. Feedback appreciated.

I would advise against keeping it there, strongly advise against it. You need to keep it a couple of feet from any wall or space so the heat can dissipate. I would put it next to your tv, standing it up so the heat all dissipates through the top vent

I would place it next to the TV, on it's side or standing.

thanks guys. I guess i'll be taking the ps3 out of it's hiding spot tonight. anyone know if the nyko cooling unit attachment works well or not? or any other cooling add-on for that matter. i seem to be deathly paranoid with overheating issues..

Don't. The cooling units just eat power and really do very little in the way of cooling down the console.

If the PS3 really needed extra cooling, Sony would've implemented such. The PS3 is fine on its own, you just need to take care of it and keep it in a safe spot.

:)

from what i hear the cooling unit is a waste of money and an increase in annoying noise.

I used to have mine in a pretty enclosed spot but it was good for one thing. Within an hour or so during the winter it would heat my entire room sometimes to the point of sweating. Even now its more out in the open but if im kinda cold ill just let it do Folding for a few hours and my room goes up a few degrees.

Hey if your wurrying about it maybe getting to hot , I think if its on glass it should be fine. Glass is a really bad heat conducter like water, rocks, and metals. If you feal something metal in your room it'll probably feel cold to the touch but its acttually the same temperature as your room. When your glass gets real hot its just forcing the heat out of itself . So in other words its stealing your ps3's heat and forcing it out of it's self. You might've heared from outdoors people that if you ever get lost in the cold to never sit on or against a rock because itll just steal your heat and you get hypothermia x(. Better to sit against a tree because wood is a really good heat conducter.

Like I have my Ps3 on metal weights that are use to weight lift lol. Ever since I never heared the fan kick onto it's high mode. Only thing about putting it in that groove is that I think it might be a hot vacation spot for the dust. I put a plastic bag over my ps3 when I'm not using xD. Aight hope it helps.

That spot where you have it should be fine. The most important thing for good ventilation is airflow. If there is some sort of backing on that table behind the PS3, I would remove it. If you are really concerned about the lack of space for proper ventilation, you can always move your PS3 off-center (notice how there are only vents on the right side and behind the PS3).

:P i moved it. it's now to the right of the tv.

i'm putting the hd cable box where the ps3 used to be. ps2's going on the left side; no PS3 BC = Buy PS2 Slim.

*good idea about covering up the ps3 when not in use.

It's probably fine. I have a release 60GB and I used to keep it in a cabinet with a door on it and just open the door. There was a satellite box in there too, which was far hotter than the PS3.

It only over heated/froze once and it still works just fine. it also looks like the cabinent has a hole in the back? If so, its totally fine.

I would certainly not put the PS3 in front of the HD TV as they usually become quite hot after a while.

The only good space I see on the pic would be the table, as your speaker emit vibrations and electro magnetic signals ; you could put it on the left of the cabinet, standing and in the back and put the left speaker some inches to the front so that its emissions would not be directed to the PS3

i find it somewhat amusing that after all that, i moved it to the right of the tv, and now it bothers me.. aesthetically.

it looked much better in the cabinet. haha. i dunno. i might just shove it back in there, and if something happens, i'll get a new ps3 with an extended warranty.
