Ok, so theres this new DVD thingamahoosite called teh Blu-Ray (HD-DVD is dead in my opinon.) I currently own a 360 and am thinking of getting a PS3. (gotta find over half a grand first) Do you think Blu-Ray will make that big of a difference in the Coming Console war? Is Blu-Ray "Where its at?"

This question should be in System Wars.

You will only get a pro-Sony point of view here.

Well, with up to 50gb and more in the future of space on one disk, as games get longer, have higher resolutions, and include more content, the space that bluray disks probive is exactly what the gaming industry needs. People may agrue that you can just compress the data and all will be fine, and yes, games DO require compression to load faster but it also gives up quality. We can only compress so much data. Eventually, they will reach a limit which they we will NEED the extra space that bluray provides. In the "Coming Console war," bruray is "Where its at."

This question should be in System Wars.

I dont think it really belongs in system wars. His question was directed toward bluray itself. No where is he comparing HD-DVDs to Bluray Disks. Bluray is one the main things that makes the PS3 what it is. Its a fair question.

I think its up to the developers if they want to take advantage of the disc space blu-ray has to offer.  Some of them will but most probably wont.  But the fact that the discs are scratch resistant is really cool!

Personally, I think Blu-Ray is 'THE' next gen format. The selections of the films available on Blu-Ray is far greater than HD DVD. Blu-Ray has the rights to James Bond and Spider-Man which are two of the biggest fanchises. Blu Ray can hold allot more data than HD DVD which in the future, that factor will matter as consumer demands more contents.

I agree with ya on BR winning. BR has tons more support from the studios.

I think the PS3's 2x BR drive is too slow to be a real advantage for the PS3 over the x360's 12x DVD drive.

developers could also, in theory fit as much stuff off a BD(blu-ray) on a DVD. They just need to compress all of their data on the discs.

Yeah but there would be a significant loss of quality, and 2 dvds could make the game more expensive.

yeah is the only thing that's not good ...but for movies 2x is OK ...for game maybe not ..so great because 2x(blu-ray)is like 8x dvd ...i think thats why install some information on you ps3 so you can get ....less load times..!!

Just because you can compress something doesn;t mean you keep its quality. In most cases, compression is about reducing the quality to fit ina smaller file size. I do a lot of video work and this is a normal issue to deal with. Have you ever seen the quality difference in an uncompressed AVI video file when compared to a video compressed into a Mpeg-2 file? Huge difference and the Mpeg-2 is DVD quality. You theory is blown.

I personaly like BluRay because of the disc space and you can also buy a Blu-Ray Burner from soney for 699.00 and HD_DVD has no Hd-DVD brurner out or is even being made. Rumor has it Microsoft may be backing Blu-Ray after all. I think is personal perffence and LG is coming out with a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player that will retail for about 1200.00 so we won't see a clear winner for a while

oh yeah and i do hope BD wins because that means the generation of consoles after this will all be using blue-ray or something better. Personaly i don't give a **** about hardware and mediums, i care about the game it self. I'm not devloper so i have no need to worry about this.

Idiot? That's not very nice, young man. What I'm talking about is now and in the future. compression is compression. It may improve a little but full quality, uncompressed audio and video will always reign supreme. Chalk one up for the idiot!!

HD is not "dead" just yet. I do think BluRay will win but the fight is not over yet. BluRay I think has more support overall from studios as well as better sales (Casino Royal did huge for BluRay). But you have to look closer to why their are better sales (software wise). If you look at the titles that have released for BluRay and the titles that have released for HD, there is no comparison atm. BluRay has the better titles.....for now. During the summer there will be a great deal of HD titles. True not gigantic titles like Casino Royal but more boxoffice titles which is where are the sales are coming from where BluRay is concerned. I really think August-December this year will be deciding factor of who wins. Sales which = $$$ is how you convince all the different stuidos to support your format. Right now I think BluRay has more support, better titles. Just thinking of Spiderman 3, Fantastic 4 II, Pirates of the Car. 3, Die Hard (new one, 4 or 5??), ect..... It will be hard to compete with that line up, maybe they can't and maybe they can. All I know is Universal (primary suporter of HD) really needs to release some BIG hits to overcome the lineup I just mentioned.

Beyond movies Blu-ray has already won the PC war.

People will be backing up to 50GB+ blueray Recordable discs in short order.

I think it's just a matter of time and it won't even be a very LONG time at this rate.

I think by end of this year general consensus is that Blu-ray is the victor.

Correct, but keep in mind anything can happen.  Like I said it will take a lot to overcome the huge titles that will only come out on BluRay.  Just remember though, HD hardware is cheaper and is predicted to still be $100 dollars cheaper in the 4th qtr.  This doesn't really mean anything because in the end, the software will sale the system.  I really think SOE got lucky having a good line up of titles in the movies + Disney full support.  Universal will not continue to poor money into HD if BluRay competely kills them in software sales this 4th qtr.  As you said, January of next year BluRay should be the winner.

But there's takinga realistic look at the future and taking an ignorant one. It is far, and I mean far far far, more liely that uncompressed will be better than compressed. Otherwise, uncompressed wouldn;t exist. Right?

Just think, most if not all of the summer blockbusters will be on blu-ray hd-dvd may get 2 or 3 of those titles if lucky and with more blu-ray players in homes this still won't matter. I think the only way HD-DVD's had a fighting chance was if M$ had the player built in the system then you'd have nearly 10 mil players in the home vs. 3+ mil blu-ray payers in homes. Then this would be a moot point but becuase of this, movie studio support, as well as computer companies (Dell, PC's in general, + Apple) BLU-Ray clearly owns...
