I just have a general question for those who have some tech know-how or just pay attention to detail.

Does Skyrim tax the PS3 like Oblivion has? (Causing it to do these seemingly horrible on the fly memory dumps, loading so much at once that leads to over heating and possible YLOD)

I've not played Oblivion on PS3 but Skyrim definately doesn't run well on PS3. I don't know if it's more an issue with the engine working with the hardware or if it's the hardware simply struggling to work with too much.

From what I've seen the game tends to run at about 25 to 30 fps with very occasional dips to even below that number. They've seemingly had to cut corners too in order to have it running even at that stage.

It's hard for me to compare it to anything else though since I've not played the Xbox360 version, only the PC version which benefits from clearly better hardware.

Personally I think it's just a poorly developed engine issue in terms of getting it to work on the hardware. I'm not saying it's entirely Bethesda's fault because it's probably been a headache to get it working even at the performance and graphical level it does at the moment.

No. Playing Skrim on the pS3 will not cause a ylod. (I keep forgetting where I put my drink...brb) The best platform for Skyrim is the pc. And, I've never experienced any "tax"-ing on my ps3 from Oblivion. :D

It freezes from time to time, but I don't think it harms the system too much. I've gone through dozens of freezes on multiple games and have done several forced shut downs and my PS3 is still running perfectly fine after over 3 years.

Oblivion was a little harsh on my 60gig and tried to load too many things at once. It caused my PS3 to YLOD last summer (which was my second) due to overheating. I'm just curious if I'm going to get the same result if I got Skyrim and if it's of the same makeup as Fallout or Oblivion? New Vegas doesn't really give me the same dumping problems Oblivion has.

well the first time i put skyrim in on my ps3, there was major lag before the part when you jump to the inn (in the beginning) and my ps3 just shut down by itself. there wasnt even a power light! but im pretty sure it was a coincidence because im borrowing my friends ps3 and theres only occasional lag and a few glitches but other than that, its fine. i wud just prefer to play it on pc!

Skyrim on ps3 seems to be barely able to run as it is. Framerate drops are often and it gets worse and worse the more you play, but apparently not for everyone for some reason. There must be some issues with the engine and for some people who trigger certain things it can turn out pretty much unplayable. A friend has about 20 hours in the game and now whenever he goes to water it freezes on him, even with latest patch. Only solution seems to be start a new game altogether which is bs to be honest. Skyrim on ps3 is a joke and makes me wonder how or if they even tested this properly.

EDIT

I actually played just two or three hours when it wasnt bad but I dont think I will ever get back to it. There is just no point when I know that one day it will mess up somehow. I only wish Bethesda didnt get away with it, they should have refunded ps3 customers as their game was clearly broken on launch and to some extent still is. I cant even imagine if some people dont have internet connection in their homes? I know that such thing is almost impossible these days but still. The 1.0 was clearly broken.

The falling in water glitch is fixed by deleting the game (not save) data, then reinstalling both the game and its updates.

PS3 received the worst Skyrim port (by far), but I have no idea if it was patched afterwards. You'll probably experience freezing and crashes, but it's really not going to cause any hardware damage to your console.
