Metal Gear Solid 4 is, imo, worth the hype. I've played through 7 times. Yeah. Anyway, playing MGS 1 would help, and perhaps MGS 3. Two was just there to introduce raiden and vamp. The stories are seperate, with a few references to ealier games (especially the Shadow Moses Stage).
I suggest playing the older ones. There is a 3 pack of 1, 2, and 3 available for $30 (just make sure u have backwards compatibility). This is very nice to add to your collection.
$2 This is a GREAT price.
So, most characters are returning from MGS 1, and the flashback movies can be better understood with past experience, but no, they're not required. You can always read the plots on the internet. Get it, especially for 20 bucks :D.

i suggest getting the earlier games just because they're awesome and the story is good. if you want to play them in chronological order to better understand them then play them 3,1,2,4 z4twennyits out of order like that/?
I was just curious, i know that this game is extremely high rated, so do i was wondering do i have to play the older ones first to get the story or are they different? To get the complete story, do all i have to get is the Essentials collection? Also is this game dropping in price quickly? Is $20 a good pricexfactor19990
MGS4 was the first MGS game i ever played. Its worth full price.. i bought it when it was first released and while i was expecting an awesome game, it just blew me away how amazing it really was.
