Is there anyway to transfer data between PS3's? If one of them has the YLOD that is. I've already looked at the fix video but I dont have thetools you need for it. I was thinking of just buying a new PS3 but if I cant transfer my saved games and all the patches I've downloaded then Im not going to do that. Only other option I really have is http://www.gophermods.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=5, if theres no way to transfer data I mean.

Unfortunately, no. The PS3 that you're transferring from HAS to be accessible (aka NOT dying / dead). I just got the YLOD myself, so I know how it is. I had warning signs leading up to it though, so I was able to back up my game saves beforehand and kept backing them up until it died. I only worried about backing up game saves. All my music, DLC, and game installs were easily recovered via backups on my computer, my download list, and by just reinstalling all games and patches.

This literally happened in the past week, haha. Luckily, the Best Buy Product Replacement Plan I paid for covered the replacement and I traded in my dead 80GB for a 250GB Slim. :)

For me and a lot of other people, an extremely loud fan. You'll know when it happens.

I'm pretty sure that it has nothing to do with a loud fan. I know mine and my brothers didn't. Also I had a couple of other friends ylod on them and told me their fans weren't loud at all.

Well what I mean is that the PS3 will sound like a jet engine. It happened to me and alot of other people who got the YLOD not too long after that.

I wasn't speaking for everyone.

The lights are just a general hardware failure warning. It could be breaks in the solder, it could be overheating, it could be the GPU. Your fan might kick in to high gear sooner than later. You might get on-screen artifacts. You might have issues like mine where games would randomly load in 480 instead of 1080. You might consistently get unexpected shutdowns.

Well, here's the breakdown of what happened for me. All of these events happened within the 4-6 months leading up to my YLOD:

  • Artifacting: I'm pretty sure my GPU got harshed aka overheated. This resulted in artifacting. Things like glitches in geometry in games previously devoid of glitches and jagged black lines coming off of any and all objects. When playing Red Dead Redemption sometimes the sky would flash red. Sometimes the entire screen.
  • Sound cutting out: In the middle of playing Bad Company 2 my sound just DIED. This wasn't an issue with my surround sound as I immediately troubleshooted using the sound dock and my iPod. Worked fine. After restarting my PS3, sound was back...only to die again 5 minutes later. At the time though the A/C in my house wasn't working. The temperature was probably around 85-90 degrees. Which brings me to the next thing...
  • Fan running louder and longer: My PS3 was always whisper soft. I never understood what people were complaining about with "fan noise" and whatnot. That is, until I played Uncharted 2. About halfway through the game I noticed the fan kicking into high gear. Then it started happening EVERY time I played. The other suspicious thing that worried me was that I would quit the game from the XMB and it would IMMEDIATELY restart my PS3. Definitely not cool. And finally...
  • Prelude to death: Along with any or all of the above I finally had it just randomly cut off on me. At first it would power back on after turning it off from the back then restarting it. 5 minutes into any game though and it would shut down. The green light flashes to yellow for a split second, then turns to a blinking red. If this happens to you, do one thing and do it quick: Grab a flashdrive, restart you PS3 so that it's up and running, and back up all your game saves. Make note of any music or video content you're going to need to recover, but don't worry about that now. Your goal is to get in and get out because your PS3 will be dead shortly. Hopefully you already have your music or other content backed up and/or can redownload it from your account on your new PS3.

Also, let it be noted: Basically 100% of the time, even if you fix a YLOD, it is going to happen again, over and over, until the system is beyond repair. My advice to you? Back up what you need, get a Slim, and kiss your copy-protected saves goodbye. That's the best thing you can do.

In addition, if your dying PS3 is on long enough to do so, sign into your account then go to Account Management. Scroll down to Activate System. Go there and choose "Deactivate System." This will save you one use of your account should you have multiple PS3s and/or are into the whole "gamesharing" thing.

Mine died with out warning. I had a local guy repair my YLOD PS3 so I could transfer my data over to my new slim. The old repaired PS3 is still kicking and gets regular use. I didn't let sony fix it because they wipe the harddrive clean when they get it and install a whole new board that won't recognize the Harddrive anyway. The only way to keep files is to repair instead of replacing and doing the data transfer before it dies again.
