I replaced my original HD with a 160GB but during the process, I couldnt take the screw off the metal cage so right I am just using my ps3 with the new HD plugged into the system without the supporting metal cage; is this going to damage my ps3 in the short run while I figure a way to separate the metal cage?

also is ps3 capable of playing HD-DVDs or only DVD/blu?

It is only capable of Blu-Ray, and DVD's. As for the screw the best thing I could suggest is an Easy Out. You can pick them up at your local hardware store. That or just bring it in to the hardware store and they can get it out for you. I know, those screws suck cuz they are way too soft. In any case good luck with that dude.

Without the hard drive being bonded to the chasis because the cage is missing, a static charge could cause problems.

I wouldn't operate the drive like you have described. JMO of course.
