Your PSN money is fine, that's tied to your PSN account not the hard drive. But anything like save data, music, etc is lost unfortunately.

I think the slim is worth it. It's a bigger hard drive, looks pretty cool, and it's nothing different, other than no backwards compatibility. You could always wait and get the 250GB Slim when that comes out.

That's true unless he can get his system to run long enough to back everything up that's on the HDD. Just remember swapping the HDD into another PS3 even the same SKU it will reformat and erase everything anyway.

Just buy a 2.5" external enclosure (they're cheap) and pop your old hard drive in. You should be able to copy your data over to the new one. Bam.

No, putting the old hard drive into an enclosure basically turns it into an external hard drive. You can then hook it up to your new ps3 like you would any other external hard drive and access the data that's on it (and I assume copy it over if you wish). You should be able to get a cheap enclosure for $15 or so, maybe less.

But like the person said above, I don't think you can just put the hard drive into the new ps3, apparently you have to reformat it when you do.

yeah it'll work; your old PS3 HDD will become an external HDD that you could connect to your new PS3 or PC via USB.

Putting the old HDD in a new PS3 would be pointless as you'd have to reformat any HDD that you want to place inside a PS3 for the first time (your old drive is no exception).

you should be able to find these enclousures selling around the $20-25 mark online (shipping included)... maybe cheaper...
