The other day i wanted to copy the save data of killzone and street fighter to my memory card as a back up. But it said copying this save data is not allowed. It is the first time im seeing this message. Is anyone else getting it? So what if we were to sell our old system and get a new one. Do we need to wait to finish the games. How are we going to copy the transfer file to other system?

Some game saves are copy protected by the devs and I really don't know why. I think the only game save that is copy protected on my PS3 is the Godfather II.

It's simple. You can't copy the save file ever. If for some reason you lost your game save, you'd have to start over with a new game save.

The only way to keep those saves is to completely back-up the entire hard drive on an external hard drive. If you pick the files that are save protected singularly then they cannot be copied.

Also, the reason that those games are save proteccted is because they have unique multiplayer data.

I think that is pointless..I mean what if something happens to your save data? We should be allowedto copy the save data as a back up. I hope they dont do this new rule for all the upcoming games. that sucks..

Yeah, some developers are **bleep**s and lock saves to your console, which is idiotic and goes against the whole open nature of PS3 saves. Locking them off makes them just as bad as Microsoft's savegame policy.

There is a good reason for this and it has to do with the games. Data is saved on files, we all know that. Servers read the file on your ps3, takes it to the network and translates it to your profile, guns, levels etc. as well asrules of the game.So instead of having a huge data file on your ps3, you get a small one that does the same thing.

What can happen is if you take your saved data, load it up on a USB and take it to your PC, you can edit the files and create some loopholes. World of Warcraft is an example of people who do it all the time to provide helpful tools for themselves. You can even download files that will edit your saves for you. The problem is people also use this as a way to cheat. This happened in CoD4 multiplayer and CoD:WaW nazi zombies.

PS3 files arn't any different, its just more difficult because the data runs on different platforms. Same reason why we don't have viruses for the ps3...yet. So to prevent this from happening, Sony has just disabled the ability to copy your file for the saftey of everone ELSE vs. the inconvienence of your own. Trust me when I say the trade off is worth it.

You can't copy data of several games. I wish the lock for KZ2 would be removed. I want to transfer my save to my PS3 Slim, but I can't. Hopefully GG will do like Capcom did with RE5 and remove the copy lock.

It's because of trophies. copying saves was never an issue before, but it's because of trophy support. Doesn't make sense to me, there are other ways to protect it so that people cannot illegitimately get trophies. This restriction is the main issue that is keeping me from trading in my PS3 for a PS3 slim.

Its not about trophies, you can still copy a lot of data from other games, just not multiplayer profile data. Try it. Get a single player game and try to copy the data and it will just ask you where you want to put it. Try it with Killzone 2 and you will get an error.

It's actually because you can hack the save files and change data in order to give you benefits in online MP games. People do it with CODMW all the time.

That's why they started locking the saves.

Ok a lot of people have had some issues with transfering their data to their new ps3 slim, thinking they can't do it. Well you can, but it takes a little bit of work. Get a external hard drive thats formatted to FAT32 (If your gonna get a new external hard drive, its worth asking the people in the store if its FAT32 before you buy) and then connect it to the PS3 via the USB ports. Don't use thumb drives etc. because it won't be large enough.

Once its connected, go to the XMB and go to Settings (2nd from left after the Users). Scroll down to "System Settings" and choose "Backup Utility". Click on that and then choose to backup your data. It should ask you where you want to backup your data and provided that your External HDD is formatted to FAT32 and connected properly to the PS3, it should be recognised. Choose that external HDD and then it should start to make a backup. This can take some time, depending on how much stuff you have on your PS3. It will look like this:

Once you have all your data onto your external HDD, connect that with your new PS3 Slim. Go to the XMB and then the same thing "Settings" -> "System Settings" -> "Backup Utility" but this time instead of choosing to backup, choose "Restore". The PS3 will recognise the external HDD and then you choose the data that is backed up on it. Its a good idea to leave the external HDD empty apart from the backed up data. The backed up data will come up as numbers which is the date and time you backed it up on. Choose that file and then your old data will be saved onto your new PS3 Slim. Presto chango. Now you can go get your Slim and quit complaining about not being able to save your data. The copy error is to prevent cheating in games, not for trophies. You can still copy single player games that don't have access to multiplayer. Hope that helps.
