Realistic has plenty of very strong contenders.
Call of Duty 4, although "old" in game terms is still an epic shooter. With awesome online and a great, if tragically short story mode saw that through to be an all time gaming classic. Nothing has annoyed me more since than being on a 28 kill spree, equalling the best of my time, about to make it 29 through a sniper shot to a motionless enemy, and then getting stabbed in the back. *sigh*
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 was an excellent game too, but in many different ways. The squad mechanics in that game, and the previous version, Rainbow Six: Vegas, are some of the best that we have seen on PS3. The online modes were various, and being able to put a silencer onto an assault rifle or SMG without it being a choice was a good move, as this feature of CoD4 got rather irritating.
Battlefield Bad Company is a fantastic game, well the demo is anyway, so the future of the actual game is only looking as bright as that phone network. Orange, thats it. It really is Call of Duty 4: With Tanks! The excellent vehicle mechanic work so well, and you might think being in a helicopter makes you invincible, but no. No no no. There are AA Guns, and plenty of rounds from an LMG will do the trick even. Tanks are equally weak in some respects. If you are driving one of the main tanks, using its cannon to kill troops is frustrating, so you have to switch seats to man the machine gun, and then you are a sitting duck for all sorts of mayhem. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the game is very well balanced.
But, looking to the future of these games, there is the all-but-confirmed Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter 3 which has been heavily rumoured amongst other game websites. Call of Duty 5 is sure to catch headlines to, but not my money. The Pacific in WW2? M'eh.
Now onto Sci-Fi. A genre that has always intrested me greatly, and this was kicked off with a bang with the purchase of my PS3.
Yes, like many of you, i got Resistance Fall of Man bundled along with Motorstorm with my PS3. And what an excellent game it is. The stroy is epic both in size and sheer quality, and the 40 player online multiplayer just never gets old, and is still popular today. The fact tat Game and Gamestation offer us just £8 for a trade in of this masterpiece is a disgrace.
Then we have The Darkness. Lots of people liked this game, although I'm really not to sure why to be honest. I was never much of a fan anyway, so i wont write anymore.
Looking to the Future of Sci-Fi FPS' is a nice sight too, with Resistance 2, Killzone 2, They, Prey and others headlining a great genre.
One i am looking out for in particular amongst those (obviosuly other than Killzone 2 - check the name;)) is "They" a Sci-Fi FPS (a bit obvios given the category) in which there are 3 types of enemy, The Spider Driods, Robots and Phantoms. The Phantoms can "host" the Robots and become 6 story tall epic mega-beasts that try to slay you. But trust me when i say the guns look cool - because you can make them! All 250 confirmed bits can be added to your gun, and then you can even choose colours! Not due out until Winter 2009, but i enplore you to add it to your tracked list, or at least go there now.
Thanks for reading, and if there are any major titles that i have missed please feel free to tell me!
