I just received this message when i switched on my PS3 it was a message of some sort saying that the memory database had to be rebuilt then gave me a yes or no option, i chose yes and fortunatly nothing seems to be different or gone missing.

Im worried however that something may be wrong with my hdd, i upgraded to 120gb a few months back, could that have something to do with it? Should i stick my 60gb back in?

All it means is that your hard drive had a corrupted piece of data on it, and your ps3 is either deleting that file, or fixing it. It's nothing to worry about. Check all your game saves and install data and see if anything was deleted.

I think i know how it happened. My nephew loves to push the button to turn on the PS3....and after the countless days of him doing it I was mad and just shut it off from the back switch without holding the off button first. The next day when I turned it on I got the message. So a tip for you guys...dont do that lol

yeah i did that too, but sadly i did not get off fine. After it said that, i had a bunch of corrupted data and that profile wont play certain games.... also, trophies dont always work and i can no longer browse the internet.... so i would check some things just to make sure.
