Hey guys, I got a question. Back in 2010, my 40GB fat PS3 got that cursed yellow light. I had it since launch, and I expected it some time. Then, I called Sony, and they said "we do not produce faulty products" in such an attitude, that I wanted to punch them, but that's another story. Well, I went to the local Sony store that's exclusively repairing/selling PS3's - a PS3 department, if you'd like - with my old 40GB model. They said that if I gave it to them, they'd give me a used, refurbished 40GB one for 150 euros. Being in a need, I bought it, and cursed them to hell.

Question is: a couple of times, during this summer, it overheated. I heard the big fans starting up, and thought "not another YLoD...". Does anyone know if the models given in the way I mentioned above are prone to that damage again?

Got my refurb 80 GB BC PS3 from Sony July 2010, its Setember 11, 2011. In others words, no problems here. People in this forums were telling me to get a slim. To me, thats a downgrade. The only thing I loss was my files.

Yeah same here, I lost my files (many MANY important files, including saves) but no way would I get a slim. The fat is so beautiful, the slim looks cheap. Also, good to hear you have it a bit more than I do, I hope we don't get to experience the same **** again.

Sadly, yes it is prone. Regardless of how you obtained your phat PS3 it is vulnerable to it, and it being used makes it even more so. I had my launch 60 GB for a while and it died 4 or 5 months ago, can't rememeber when exactly but I took extreme care of it. Your best option would be to get a slim (which is what I did), even slims have a chance of YLod but it's smaller. If you don't want a slim, then stick with your phat one but expect it to break again.

I would just wait for a new PS3 to be on sale. Who knows how well its been fixed or handled in the first place and the fats are just more prone to it anyways.

Absolutely. The most that might of been done to it is the reflow fix if it had the common cause of the YLOD previously and that fix is only temporary. It could last you a while but not as much as you'll hope for.

That's really sad to hear, I really can't afford 150 euros each year because Sony is a sad bunch of scammers... But the slim looks so cheap, I don't want it, plus I bought a 500GB HDD for my fat and it's fantastic now. I've read that the cause of the YLoD is overheating, and some solder joints on the boards melt, thus making the PS3 incapable of working anymore. I know that the PS3 is not ventilating well, and that's the reason this happens. Is there any way for me to reinforce the joints, or even make some heat exits? Thanks guys!

I had to get my ps3 replaced back at the end of 2009. My refurb has lasted longer than the one I bought new from the store. Go figure, I feel like it's only a matter of time, between movies and gaming my ps3 gets used a ton. But it might be a sign to get a slim, we shall see whatever is the cheapest path possible at this point. Hopefully it will keep on kicking.

My older one kept overheating, even though I had it perfectly clean and in open space, probably because I played a lot. I'm not playing with this any less either, and in 1 full year, it only overheated twice or so.
