Ok here's a serious questions for those who already played Monster Hunter Freedom 2 . Gamespot gave a mere 5.0 rating for this game, somewhat shows that it's not that great.

I personally planned to buy this game next week but after seeing the 5.0 rating from Gamespot, it kinda worries me. Though i've been reading through those reviews in Gamefaqs and most of the players gave quite a high rating for the game , quite noticibly from a range of 8.0 to 10.

I wonder how could there be a huge rating difference between gamespot's review and players review. Therefore i would like to know that should i get this game or give it a pass? Thanks.

It all depends on your tastes. MHF2 was given such a miniscule score because they took into knowledge the fact the it's predecessor was so alike and the game has a strange camera system. If you like variety and a somewhat-free roaming game then take it. Take note you'll enjoy it better with friends to play with in later stages.

It got a low score because there were no improvements from the 1st game, & the fact that you need to spend a lot of time to get engaged in the game.

Well, the biggest beef I had with the reviewer is that it sounds like he doesn't really know what he is talking about. I mean, I can accept a score for a game as long as the reviewer can explain his/her views. This reviewer sounds like he played the game for around a hour, got bored, downloaded a game save that had awesome stuff, and got bored of it. Part of the fun of the game is seeing yourself get better weapons, armor, and just playing better and smarter. He misspells some weapon types and generally seems like he is fabricating everything watching trailers and his beginning play.

Remember, reader reviews are almost always better than professional reviews.

Yea what you actually said make sense. Nothing seems right after comparing the review from Gamespot and Gamefaqs. For a score of 5.0 is just too low for a game that was quoted in the wiki section for its reception value - as below..............

"Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, as it is called in Japan, has sold more than 2.06 million copies in Japan, and has become the highest selling psp game ever in that region. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd has also overtaken its predecessor as the best selling PSP game in Japan."

I think Gamespot should RE-REVIEW this game and reconfirm the FINAL RATING for it.

Another thing. The general public doesn't like Monster Hunter either. I don't know if you have noticed, but games have been generally getting easier over the years. Now, some games are getting knocked down for sometimes being too hard. Monster Hunter IS hard. You aren't going to be killing anything 10x your size without considerable trouble in real life anyways.

i'm just gonna say that it's an AWESOME game, BUT takes patience... to get started, you'll get your butt handed back to you by the lowest ranking hunts, and i'm not exaggerating lol, if there isn't a person to help you get started like a friend thats already some way into the game, it's one tough cookie to crack... but once you get past that stage it will be the best game you've ever played. I'm around 30 hours into it right now and it's getting quite good... even though i'm not even finished 20 percent of the game XD

My problem with reader reviews is that often times young readers buy into the hype of a game and even if a game is bad, they try to convince themselves that it is good because they need to justify to themselves that they didn't waste their money, which young readers tend to have less of. In short, there can be a lot of positive bias in a reader review.

A professional reviewer sees games from a different perspective. Since they are exposed to so many games, they tend to rate things lower than readers might because to a certain extent, they have been "jaded" from simply playing too many games. Some games that get low reviews are rated higher by reader reviewers partially because casual gamers don't have such high expectations.

In the end, I think you need to read several reader and professional reviews to get a sense if you will enjoy a game. Don't just look at scores either. I think simply looking at a score is the biggest mistake a reader can make when trying to pick a game. If a review is written well, you should be able to understand why a game was rated low and you might be able to decide if the things that bothered the reviewer will bother you.

Quite true. Just look at the NFS Pro Street PSP members reviews. Some of those guys are just masochist .

Well, yah. What I meant was look at all the reader reviews and see what they have to say. Typically, you can tell if someone is biased, hasn't played the game before, or both. Look for the ones that actually sound intellectual. Personally, I would say to go to a review board and ask, not whether you should buy it, but rather what they like about the game.

Also, gamefaqs also has some pretty good reader reviews for games as the reader reviews have to go through review before they are posted up for everyone to see.

Sometimes its good to trust the Gamespot review because the reviewer has a better view of all the games of the same genre than many gamers. Alot of these buy a game and after paying alot of money for it try to convince themselves that the game they bought is better than what they flush down the toilet. MHF was an exeption though. It is really something else

One thing I forgot to mention about professional reviews. They sometimes rate a game lower when its a sequel with minor improvements. Now I haven't played MHF, but my understanding is that MHF 2 is basically the same game with some minor improvements. So when you look at the reviews, MHF will have scored higher than MHF 2 even though MHF 2 is the better game, so looking at the score is misleading. I think this is a significant problem in many professional reviews. I think when a game's rating is dropped for being mostly a sequel, I think the reviewer needs to explicitly state this and state how much they dropped the review score.

For example, lets say I own Golf 07' which may be an excellent game, and Golf 08' comes along. Now lets say a professional review scores drops the score of 08' over 07' even of 08' is the better game with only minor improvements. Well if I don't own, nor have ever played 07', somtimes a reviewer misleads a reader into thinking 08' is no good because the improvements are minor. Well if your new to 08' then it may be a game you'll enjoy a lot. Well I hope that made sense, I know it was a bit convuluted, sorry.

Don't even bother reading the Gamespot review of this game...I remember reading the review of this game when it came out and laughing the whole way though, but it was clear that the reviewer spent no time with the game. You could tell he probably put in 30minutes, assumed it was exactly the same as the first, and never really made a true review for the game. You can easily see this by reading the review and finding that some of the comments he made are just flat out wrong. I don't remember what parts, but I'm not reading through that unprofessional "piece of writing" again. I remember him complaining about a bunch of things that you couldn't change or had to be done a certain way, and there was no way to change/control these things....funny thing was, is if he had really played the game, he would have noticed that you could change these things.

The Monster Hunter: Freedom series remains my favorite video game series of all time, and I recommend that everyone at least gives it a shot. Read the player reviews and reviews on other sites...they do this game a lot more justice.

Probably the one who reviewed the game didnt bother to understand the system well. Monster hunter freedom is a fun game, in my perspective, this game requires skills unless you prefer those buttons smashing game like tales of eternia or perhaps god of war. Monster hunter actually require the player to understand the monster well, know when is their next move and when best to attack.

it might seem hard at first to beat a certain boss even those at low levels but eventually you'll get to mastered the monster movement well and tada.. when you finally beat it, it feels like a orgasm!

further move the thing i like about this game is that the levelling system you dont get experience points like most games instead you get high level monster to beat, to aid you to getting there you hunt and craft better weapons from mobs to make your life easier.

Lastly it is fun to play together in adhoc mode. Hearing one another shouting across the room etc! wwoot!

You probably want to save your money to get Monster hunter portable 2nd Gen. Its coming out soon anyway (i hope)

read the review on my profile, it explains in detail why it got a low score from gamespot, but why it can still be a great game.

I don't mind the fact it's hard but it's just the difficulty curve is stupidly high. It's all fine until the Yian Kut Ku, then you just get your ass handed to you. And when you finally do that one, all the other monsters you slay are the same! And that's when you really start to notice the games flaws, the items that take like 4 seconds to use (damn you potions!), the annoying weapon system where you end up missing half your attacks against faster creatures, even using a normal sword. I really did enjoy the game up until that point.

i think the game is way overrated among fans. everywhere you go its "monster hunter is the best thing to ever happen". its a good game, but not that great.

my real gripe with the game is just the controls. it generally controls alright, if only your character wasn't so god damn slow. and the lack of a lock on function. its SOOO frustrating how if you get a huge ass sword but you can barely kill anything with it cos it swings so damn slow. you can march RIGTH NEXT to your enemy and swing down vertically and still not hit him just because you were facing slightly to the left. you end up relying purely on the side slash, which still isn't that great.

the game takes ALOT of patience. some people just won't like it that much, like myself. i can respect its huge fanbase and that its probably a good game for alot of people. but for me its not that great, and while the game is underrated, i dont think it deserves more than a 7.5
