I would add Code Veronica between 3 and 4. To the OP, if you can't play RE Zero, I wouldn't worry that much, since it was released after the first three games anyway, but it is cannon though.

i would suggest starting from the start. re0,re,re2,re3,code veronica,re4,re5

probably u should start with 1 or any series actually i dont have problems starting with any part so its ur choice but if needs the player to know the full story from the begining then u have to start 1 cuz i didnt use resident evil b4

Just play them from order of release.

You're a little bit late as it was announced a while ago. It's coming out this fall.

And the links in your sig don't link me to anything.

And TC if you can play the RE's in order of release but I played 4 w/o playing the others and felt fine on the story.

Well, it worked with RE4 because the story is the most ridiculous of the bunch, except for having Leon, Ada and a bit of Wesker, that wasn't a really RE game IMO. Can you imagine the OP starting with RE3? He/she should start in order of release.
