The next instalment in the Resident Evil series will be a full franchise reboot, Capcom's Resi dev team has said.

Speaking to US site 1UP, producer Jun Takeuchi said Resident Evil 5 is likely to be the last of its kind, which is sure to please reviewers who've complained of its glaring similarities to the previous game.

The Resi 5 producer's comments echo those of departed series creator Shinji Mikami, who told Official PlayStation Magazine "I think Resident Evil 5 doesn't need to change the series, but Resident Evil 6 will have to reinvent the series with another full model change or else it won't be able to keep on going."

Xbox World 360 mag said in its exclusive review: "Resident Evil 5 is to Resident Evil 4 what Call of Duty: World of War is to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: an imitation whose successes are predominantly ideas lifted straight from the previous game."

Sounds like a change might be for the good then. Frankly, we wouldn't mind a change back to the slower paced, zombie-filled mansion theme.

Resident Evil 5 is out on March 13.

But.... was the reason they changed it in the first place not because the controls from the trilogy were too slow for today's customers? Would need to be something if they had to slow the action back down again

Everyone I know always mentions "Oh, there is no moving while your gun is aimed" This isnt Dead Space! You don't even need it to be honest. It just adds to the sense of panic.

EXACTLY! The funny I it was that many people complained on how the series was very slow paced and wanted a more action packed theme to it. Now that they get what they want they complain, human nature of course.

Lets be real about this though, RE is and will always be considered in the Survival Horror genre. Lets think about this thuroughly, the series needed to evolve and thats exactly what capcom has done so well to bring a more deeper story then just a virus that was made by some scientist that would convert many civilians into zombies. Lets also not forget that there not only zombies in the series, there were also different mutated creatures that included spiders.

Survival Horror is not to have the gamer get scared #@%less all the time, but more of playing a character in the game that has to survive the horror situations within the game. Wouldn't any of you be scared of you saw a group of hunters run after you to slice your head off?

Well I guess this means we shouldn't expect RE6 until the next gen, RE4 was also a reboot and it came out like 5-6 years after RE3, I assume the same will happen to RE6. That doesn't mean we wont see anymore RE after RE5, Im sure there will be plenty of spin-offs before the immenent aarrival of a proper sequal.

Not that RE5 won't be awesome, but it's nice to see Capcom is willing to redefine the series and not beat it to death using the same forumla a la dynasty warriors.

personaly i love the new system i hated the Old RE series, die hard fans will call the old series survival horror and scary.....are you kidding me ? xD whats scary about moving slow, running in circles around zombies till you get far enough to shoot them, if they ever go back to the old RE,that will be the day i dont buy a RE game, i played the demo, and RE5 is the first resident evil game i actualy like lol

I was the type who liked RE4 over the old slow paced series. That does not mean I didn't enjoy them. In fact I loved RE Zero and RE on GameCube. Thought they were great great games.

So I wouldn't mind them backtracking to the old system.

Thanks for the info, by the way.

Oh that's awesome man. I thought RE4 was cool, and I'm pretty sure RE5 will rock just as much socks. But with the way RE is it's just no very much of a scary game to me. 4-5 seemed more like pure action adventure then a survival horror so hopefully 6 will be the RE I've been waiting for.

er... dunno wtf you're talking about when it comes to movement. RE5 and the originals are really no different in that department... you can't move while you shoot, in all of them you can walk and run... you have to kite your enemies (Fire, run, fire, and so on). The difference is the camera and the ability to aim... think before you post man.

I sure hope it's a full reboot, because 5 is garbage. RE 4 was great, I just can't stand 5...MorbidToaster

I guess everyones entitled to their opinion but I respectfully disagree. I always played Resident Evil because the story intrigued me. When 4 came along I couldn't believe how far they dropped off in quality with respect to the story, especially after ReMake seemed to prove that Capcom was capable of producing good dialog. In fact it looks like Capcom really took a lot of the feedback they got from 4's dialog to heart and instead put a lot of effort into producing a great story. I think that everyone that liked four mainly found enjoyment in the gameplay which to me felt a little repetitive after a while. Plus without a story to drive me on the gameplay wore thin on me to the point where it felt way to repetive. In short it felt like Capcom approached Paul W.S. Anderson about writing the story for RE4. I mean it has all the elements that make up a Resident Evil Movie.

-Overpowered non-chalant characters

- Little to do with the existing Resident Evil universe

- Predictable plot (seriously if Ashley had died the plot itself would have easily uped itself a grade or two)

- Lifeless enemies (and I'm not talking about the Zombies of the Ganados).

- Total character assasination of a series favorite (in this case Leon even though a handful would disagree).

I definately will be the first to admit that after 0 Capcom needed to take the series in a new direction though I wish they had stuck more with the horror element. And to anyone who thinks zombies can't be scary, play ReMake and then tell me how calm you are when a Crimson head is charging at you full speed in the distance while you have no idea where he is. Then compare that to the villagers who run at you but then stop and give you a chance to aim.

As far as this reboot is concerned what does everyone think it applies to. Is it going to be a completely new story, or will it's focus mainly be on a new style of gameplay? I have trouble believing that they can extend the current storyline much farther, unless of course they're able to produce a new villan that will eventually be comprable to Wesker. And no Sadler is not an excuse, if I get my way his only appearence in RE5 will be through flashbacks. Still with 5 they seem to be cashing in quite a handful of loose ends, but from the trailers it looks like it's all going to be worth it.

especially when your main character is trained military/swat type personnel. takes you out of the game.

[QUOTE="MorbidToaster"]I sure hope it's a full reboot, because 5 is garbage. RE 4 was great, I just can't stand 5...DirkXXVI

Agreed. I had always known the controls were lame, can't deny it, but it didn't matter... I've never complained about the controls or the new changes. The stories have always been heavy and eventful. Though the reason why I prefer the old ones is because in RE4 and RE5 these both seem to kind of have this cheesiness to them, heh. I don't know how to explain it... for explain, like in Resident Evil 0 during the first hour or so in the train. Billy dives and shoots a leech in the middle of the air. When I saw that I laughed so hard in disbelief.

Well keep in mind I'm actually very excited about RE5. In fact part of the reason I've decided to buy it is because from what I've seen in the demo's and trailers they've not only gotten rid of most of the cheesy action cliches that ruined RE4 for fans like you and me, on top of that they also seem to have incorporate a level of depth thats only been seen in games like Metal Gear Solid. This time around my only complaint would be a lack of what seems to be deliberate horror but there also seems to be a chance that Capcom will deliver on the promise of the second half of the game being scary and if so I can easily live with that. Either way the only thing I ask is that the mistakes made in 4's narrative are done away with. I'll save bringing back zombies for the next game which could easily not be until 2012.

On a side note I think that scene with Billy in retrospect might have been the start of something bad now that I look back on it, then again what came first ReMake or 0 because with ReMake Resident Evil was pretty much perfected, the only problem being that we knew how the story was going to turn out.

I hope they bring back survival horror, scary atmosphere, plenty difficult puzzles and old school controls, we have enough action games right now and its nice to play something a little slow paced but at the same time thrilling

Liked RE0, loved RE1, 2, 3, Code: Veronica, HATED 4, and have nothing but contempt for the RE5 demo. A full reboot for RE6 will be more than welcome if it can find the scares, and the puzzle elements, of the first games. I still have to say the controls needed to evolve with the change in gameplay in RE4, and unfortunately RE5 looks to carry on the same lazy controls even though it's a Dead Space type of game now.

Sometimes it sucks being a gamer from way back, being so familiar with, IMO, the quintessential RE games just makes 4 & 5 such big disappointments.

he zombies just occasional jumps like when the dog jumped out the window, walking over a dead zombie that wasnt dead... lil things like that..Keasy4

So you c-l-a-s-s-ify the survival horror genre from previous installments (before 4 of course) because of those "lil things like that"? I can honestly say after RE1, I bought RE2 and I wasn't even jumping at all...

Sorry buddy, but you and many misinterpret the genre of "survival horror".

You do realize that RE4 came out on January 2005 right? Dead Space came out on October 2008...... :|

Plz every1 r kno that Capcom r travel back in the time and make RE4. However while I share Touch's disdain for RE4 I don't think it's deserved with 5 as they really seemed to have put a lot of effort into production, but I guess a lot of fans won't rest untill the game gets back in touch with it's survival horror roots. Can't say I really blame them but I really think RE5 won't leave me with the same bad taste I got from RE4. However I dream of a day where crimson heads are the primary enemies.

[QUOTE="ANIALATOR136"]i just seen this on PSU! Good job on keeping us all up to date though THQ88

No problem. I hope they go back to "Survival Horror".

Me too the older gameplay is my favorite. I'd seriously pay $120 for it.

Hmm, a fully 3d code veronica style SH with 4 or 5's shooter elements could be really good. Perhaps you could lock onto enemies and move around them in third person but go in over the shoulder for more precise shots while standing still. Could work, and it would also keep the traditional SH gameplay.

I do hope they don't ruin this franchise by turning it FPS or very similarities to COD:WAW as mentioned earlier in the interview for RE6 (presumably being worked for PS3). I admire this game, but I won't play the next if it's FPS.

Remember Chris said he sometimes wonder is it worth fighting for? No one really says that unless it's something they have sought after for a very long time, which he has and it just does not seem to end. I haven't played the whole series but these big pharmaceutical companies chain never seem to end, it took a few game's which finally led to Umbrella's distruction, now there's still a few more. Basically, this problem will still go on for a very long time, therefore the story will continue, maybe till RE8 but that's just a hunch.

I agree that the move and shoot shouldn't be allowed. Also, let's get rid of bullets. One or two per gun, maybe. And make the knife dull, too. Sharp knifes are no fun.

Yes I am well aware. But that was 4 years ago and RE5 is now so I chose to use it as my reference.

Pointless ramble;

I had to force myself to finish 4, the same can't be said for just the demo of 5.
