Problem is that both can pretty much be standalones. The stories do connect because you see the exact scene in the R2 where R1 left off, but there is no attachment to other characters besides Nathan.
I didn't know that people cared about the stories in FPS. They are all pretty much the same aren't they? Aliens are trying to kill you and your race wiith some occassionally being smart enough to live and kill in space. Has there been a FPS where you are a girl instead of a guy, besides Metroid?

R1 is pretty weak and you don't learn anything about the Chimera. And R2's is thin if you don't pay attention to the dialouge or read the intel you find. Personally after I read the intels and paid closer attention to the plot was pretty awesome I thought. The origins of the chimera were a pretty nice twist that wasn't explored at all in the first game. But its biggest flaw is that R2 dropped interesting characters for more sterotypes even changing the personality of Nathan Hale between games. Though the ending is amazing and definitely not expected and really broke the mold for these sci-fi shooter games. Definitely got me wondering about whats gonna happen in R3.
Resistance 1 has a decent story. Nothing like GTAIV or MGS4, but it's alright. A high quality plot isn't to be expected from all first person shooters. The inclusion of a narrator was nice though, but the lack of a narrator in Resistance 2 sort of hinders the story a bit. I guess I'm just used to playing games like God of War, where you have a narrator giving you some back story.

the stories are good if you take the time to get into them, r2 doesn't you alot of cut-scenes but there a ton of dialog between the characters, and read the reports theres alot of info there. FPS games aren't known for story telling (save bioshock) R1 and R2 are good.
The story itself is novel and interesting. The way it's presented makes me feel like I'm just going from station to station, with little emotional connection to anyone but the main character. Everyone else seems disposable.
