This is a deal cut by a retailer awash in UMD stock with an influx of holiday titles they need to make shelf space for, not Sony... and they're not going to make it cheap for Go owners. They can set the price they want and Go owners either pay or go without. Makes pure business sense.

Unfortunately this is spot on. And that's what makes the Go such a bittersweet purchase for me. I love the damn thing and have played it more since I got it in early October than I ever played my 1000/2000 up until that point. I just can't stand the old PSP design. But yeah, it's a bummer to be completely enslaved to PSN pricing. It's getting better in the sense that Konami seems to understand how to price games on PSN, which hopefully force other publishers to cut price as well. To be honest, I love the Go's controls so much that I wouldn't mind if I had to pay only $5 more for a game at any given time, but when you look at this sale and see a $25 difference, then it's just a bit hard for me to swallow.

Publishers aren't any more into the idea of cutting prices when you take all of the loss to piracy etc. as reported on this website alone. They'd like to see titles sell through for as high a price as possible for as long as possible.

Sucks but true.

if it makes you feel any better, i paid 40$+ tax when it came out, on the very first day. i agree psn prices should be given a discount just because they can sell more in volume to make up for the price cut. by punishing the paying customers with a high price is not the right way to compensate for the loss due to piracy. paying customers should be rewarded. currently psn is more like "oh piracy is abundant, so someone has to pay for it, how about you guys that bought the shiny new GO volunteer to make up for our losses.". business should be about "you guys are our paying customers, here is a discount, so you can buy more from us and be repeat customers".

i just got introduced to a place called itunes, due to a recent birthday gift, and frankly, i think their store model is much better than psn at the moment and psn should use that store as an example.

Jason you're assuming that Sony has a conscience... you're attributing human qualities to athing which exsists for bottom-line reports being in the black or the red... not fair or unfair. They're not stinging Go users, they're tightening their leaks... in the PROCESS, Go users can suffer... but it's not about puting the screws to one set of people for the crimes of another it's just straight-up "How Much Profit Can We Make?"... and when you can do a given volume no matter the price (because there's no other way to fill your shiny new Go but to pay Sony what they ask), that price will not change. Every person who bought a Go bolstered the infrastructure of the PSN, the PSP, Sony, and on and on, but they also let Sony know just how much potential revenue, even on a basic estimate level, which they could depend on coming in for the future.

Go users must buy games, and they can only get them ONE place. Fish in a barrel, my friend. Captive audience. Like tourists at a resort, where a chocolate peanut from the mini-bar costs $10 because it's the only chocolate peanut for miles. You can either pay the $10 and have your treat, or you can sit across the room andcurse about how expensive things are, and go without.

There is nothing wrong with this relationship if that's what you (Gamer X) agree to sign up for. There's nothing wrong with the Go or Digital Distribution. It's just all in your needs and wants... I know I don't paint a pretty picture of Sony and their handling of us users of their fine products, but don't be naive about what they are in the business to do - Make Money. As much, as fast, and keep as much for themselves as is humanly possible. Period.

It would be great if they became some sort of video game Mother Tereasa and began doing the work of the Lord and all, but seriously man... don't hold your breath. Mark my words: Human beings will never achieve a Utopian society or even get close, because ambition is ingrained in us - to get ahead, be a little better off than the next guy, and/or exploit those around us for our own gain/ amusement.

Sony will not let up. Why should they?

I agree with you completely on how Sony is here to make money. I have always said the same thing when people complained about prices being too high for the GO. Sony is a corporation, and as such, their main goal is to make as much profit as possible. The thing is, when Sony does not budge with their prices, they CAN lose long time customers, who look for alternatives. Alternatives can be switching to other consoles(very bad for sony), or buying older gen PSP like 3000 or 2000, so they can buy UMD's again(still bad since they are losing customers that prefer an older model over their newest model). Anyway, I have nothing against the PSP go. But the PSN prices are ridiculous for something that you can't resell and stuck with. I am glad I still have my PSP 2000 and do not have to be in this money grabbing trap that GO users can't get out (if they are in that situation).I will be very shocked but not surprised knowing SONY, if sony does not give any discount during the holiday season to sell more volume on PSN. Every gamestop/EB games I go to has some kind of deal going for the holiday season.

And the reason I quoted you is because, to answer your question, Sony needs to defend itself from it's competition. When you try to play a monopoly in an industry where there are many other alternatives, in my opinion, that is a very bad management decision. I am still a PSP fan, but when I see games offered for 0.99 cents and 2.99$, and 4.99$(by a competitor/alternative handheld device in their store), it makes me wonder if I am making a mistake each time I buy a game for 40$. I know the 40$ games that I buy are well worth it and cannot be compared to a 0.99 cent game offered by a competitor, but lately, I am enjoying more volume over quality of a game.

Just so this thread does not go totally of topic: Resistance Retribution rocks and I would buy it for 15$ if I did not already have the UMD for it. I had a very memorable experience playing this, and maybe I might just load it up and play it again.

Actually, I'm not so sure about this. For the record, as much as I love my Go, it's been pretty much a failure in terms of sales. I don't know the exact reason, but I'm sure there's a certain level of mistrust with an all-DD platform (and with Sony's pricing, consumers are only going to dig in further). Digital distribution works in the PC realm because there's competition- don't like Steam (like I do)? Go buy your game on Impulse...or Direct2Drive....or Gamersgate. Since there's real competition here, these guys are forced to have sales ti draw in customers. Sony will never have competition to PSN outside of buying another platform....and in the handheld space, there's only one other choice which is very different (and frankly, I do not like). Anyway, the reason I said I'm not so sure is because of what we've seen from PC digital distribution. Here, read this. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/02/left-4-dead-sees-3000-jump-in-sales-on-steam.ars The deeper the sale, the higher the volume. So if Resistance (now $4o on PSN) were cut to $10 and it followed the a similar pattern, it would likely make even more money for Sony. Now, remember, these are digital products, so publishers don't have to worry about a) reselling, and more importantly b) any per unit costs (case, UMD, etc). They could theoretically sell these games for $1 each and make a profit on every unit sold, something that would be impossible with a physical format. The reason I said Konami seems to get it is because of last week's PSN update. They had quite a few games up for $10 and SIlent HIll Origins for $15. As a consumer, at those prices, I actually became interested in some of those games. And really, would it be possible to find a copy, new or used, of Death Jr for less than $10? Maybe, but it's doubtful that you could buy it on ebay (plus shipping) for much less than that or find it in Gamestop. So now you're looking at $10 either way. One nets you a physical copy which you could resell for probably $5 or a digital copy that can be used on several PSPs simultaneously and you'll never have to worry about getting lost/broken. Both have their benefits, but now it's far more competitive and Konami actually gets money from the digital copy. I feel like the more games that get on PSN, the more prices have to come down because publishers are going to want their game to stand out most in a very, very crowded wall. Could be completely wrong, though.
