So, I've been having problems with the resolution on my PS3. I have a 1080p HDTV, and when I try to play 1080p games like GTAIV or CoD4, the game runs at 720p. I can get the game to run at 1080p if I deselect 720p and 1080i in Display Settings, but then I have to switch it back every time I want to play an older game that only runs at 720p. Its kind of annoying to have to change the display settings depending on what game I'm playing.

So, why does the PS3 decide to run 1080p games at the lowest HD resolution instead of the highest?

Either way you cut it you are not playing the games in 1080p. Whether you send your 1080p TV a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal in MOST cases you aren't going to see a difference in the picture. There are games like Gran Tourismo 5 Prologue and Virtua Tennis 3 that natively support 1080p, but most games are designed for 720p and that is what you are getting.

You can deselect those resolutions in the Display Settings for a game like COD4, but it isn't going to make a difference.

Bottom line is you really shouldn't dwell on this.
