You can avoid all of the confusion by getting a television that supports 720p, and leave your PS3 on that setting. 720p is the standard for the majority of games on the PS3, and does the job just fine. You can not even notice a difference between 720p and 1080p unless you have a ginormous television and are sitting very close to it.
The PS3 didn't have an upscaler function until a few month back, somewhere around the 1.81 update I think. Its only a horizontal upscaler, meaning the game needs the vertical to be 720 or 1080 to use it, but its apparently just a drop in funtion. Before this dev's would have had to program all the different resolutions in themselves, and 1080i only sets were probably in the minority at the time.mbrockway
i wasn't aware of this...well, is there plans to make this upscaler for 1080i common in all future games?

ya, i know that it would be easier...but cost way too much. I don't have any intention on buying a new TV anytime soon...i dont care the difference between 720p and 1080p...but 480p and 1080i is a huge difference.
[QUOTE="chex81"]im pissed as to why developers can make all the games 720p but not 1080i...unfortunately my TV doesn't support 720p so those games have to be played in 480p....which SUCKSdstryr13
try unchecking everything but 1080i
that should force the game to run at 1080i
I did...it just scrambles the screen, as though it cannot register the proper resolution...480p isn't the worest thing in the world, but i wanted to buy some multiplatform for Ps3 this year....but if i have no choice but to run a game in 480p and the games on 360...ill get the 360 version.

That does suck, because there are alot of games that don't play in 1080i. you can tell a huge difference too in the XMB interface when you switch from 480p to 1080i too.[QUOTE="chex81"][QUOTE="dstryr13"][QUOTE="chex81"]im pissed as to why developers can make all the games 720p but not 1080i...unfortunately my TV doesn't support 720p so those games have to be played in 480p....which SUCKSmotherboop

Folklore looks awesome, even in 480p....Heavenly Sword looks bad in 480p

You know what game is a huge difference? Orange Box. It's like night and day.The thing that almost nobody realizes is that running games in 1080i or p is very taxing on the equipment inside your television, and it is also a lot more costly to manufacture games in such a high resolution due to the need for a lot more optimization and a ton more texture mapping, among many other things.
I've run many games in 720p and compared them to 1080p - to me the difference is totally not worth ruining my television over, and the artifacting that happens is just annoying. All of that being said, those of you out there who insist on running everything in 1080p - just know that when you burn your TV out, I'll be laughing at you in spirit while I continue to enjoy my games, with VERY little difference, in 720p.

if i had the option to play in 720p....i wouldn't complain lol
I noticed some games can play in 1080i.1080p. (Such as COD:4) Why is the game broadcasting in 720p by default. I found the only way to recognize 1080 was to go into settings and uncheck 720p. I know there are some games that can reconginize the conversion without any problems. Is this a glitch, or are most game developers, setting games at 720p for defualt.jester0815
Most set theirs on 720. Because their was one system out for a year, and only one. Now with 3 and a new age. Yea that will change. And more so with each passing day.

its alomst uneccessary to play in anything above 720p if you have a TV under 50 inches. 720p is the standard High Def output for the PS3, and it always will be. You'll never see a game on this system that only plays in 1080p.Please Log In to post.
