It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a lot of challenge and only enjoy guitar, I'd suggest GH3. If you want to play all the instruments and have friends over often, I'd say Rock Band. I'm not sure about the guitars as I have both for 360. In regard to instruments breaking easily, EA does really well with replacing them.
Rockband is better, I own both and the only reason I fire up guitar hero anymore is to play rage against the machine. Rockband has more instruments and better song selection, more downloadable content and a music store. As for the comment about a poster having very bad musical taste, what music you like is a matter of opinion and not fact, so my opinion is that your the one with the bad taste. As another side note when my friends come by my house they ask if they can play Rockband, without even mentioning Guitar Hero their must be a reason for that.

For the most part I agree with StrmRidr although I wish RB had some Pearl Jam.
I will have to disagree with Tony as well. I personally have Guitar Hero but think I would rather have Rock Band. I personally think the songs are better there and there is much more DLC.
My Nephew down the road has Guitar Hero. And its a blast to watch him and my Brother in law play. I have seen RB in action to. Not sure. GH looks vary fun. I cant do it because I play guitar some for real. And it messes me up some. So I just watch. But it looks vary fun. And man they get into it lol. Ill have to film them onetime.
Rock Band has a LOT more DLC with every type of style you'd imagine. You don't have to buy it all, but I'm certain there is a song that everybody would enjoy.
I'd say guitar Hero jsut because of songs. Guitar hero has around 75 tracks. And plus there is 6 downloadable that are free on psn so in total around 80 songs. Will rockband has around 55 songs.
The only downside for me with RB is you gotta play through a good amount of crap songs to get all the good ones. But after that, RB is fun as hell with friends over or alone.

QFT, and better pricing on the DLC as well. GH3 definitely has the superior guitar... but hopefully the 3rd party peripheral that works with both games will help. Activision's running GH into the ground quickly.
neither....don't give them your money until they can have the decency to give their loyal consumers a guitar (or a patch) that allows one guitar to work for both GH3 and Rock Band.
