If you wanted your ps3 to get an IP you'd probably have to power off and on your modem... All Internet Service Providers are a little different but some force you to register your computer to work. Anyways, you should get a router so you don't have to keep moving the cable back and forth. Once you have a router in place it will hand out addresses to your computer(s) and the PS3, then link them to the internet.

wired is always preferred if possible. You would only go wireless if it was physically too difficult to get a cable to the ps3 from the router. That side, it is nice to get a wireless router in case you want to use a wii, ds, ps3, or laptop with it in the future. I prefer linksys and d-link, but there are some other great brands out there.

it is a good idea to get a router but if you dont really want to you dont have to

in order for it to obtain the IP address you must first unplug your power cord from your MODEM, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in

after that try to run an internet connection test on your PS3 and to do this go to Setting>Network Setting> Internet Connection Test

it will tell you that it has to disconnect and all that, just select yes and then it will run the test and it should be able to obtain everything
