With the release of several RPG's coming to the PS3 in the future such as FFXIII and White Knight story both looking like excellent games I cannot avoided looking into buying these games. However i haven't played any RPG games (except oblivion which i didn't enjoy) and so i was wondering what RPG games you would recommend as a starter for an inexperienced player.

Thanks

Shame you don't like Oblivion, you are one of the few I've hear say that. Try out Folklore and look for various PS2 and PS1 RPGs. Theres a ton of em.

I heard Folklore is good, the demo was kind of interesting. Oblivion is also supose to be really good. Try those.

No worries if u didnt like oblivion its a western RPG at heart so its not like many other

Current gen PS3 RPGs arnt that good folklore is decent but is ultimately un interesting and very confusing

I got me a PS3 just for the final fantasy series so ur proberly best of waiting for them or going for last gen RPGs

Don't worry that you didn't like Oblivion - it's a Western RPG, which is totally different than a Japanese RPG like FFXIII or White Knight. Many JRPG fans (like me) don't care for Western RPGs either.

Anyway, try out any of the FF series. I'd suggest 10 and 12 for starters, just because it might be easier for you to get into the genre by starting with games that aren't too dated graphically.

For PS3 the only RPG that's worthwhile is Folklore, and that only partially qualifies as an RPG anyway... So if you really want to explore the genre, you're going to have to be going with PS1 and PS2.

It depends if you care about graphics at all or not. I can list a bunch for you, all great games, but some of them are ps1 so their graphics won't be great. Also, some of them will be near impossible to find for a decent price.

I put an * by the ones I feel are exceptional.

PS1: Final Fantasy 7*, Final Fantasy 8* (see, I like 8 a lot ;) ), Final Fantasy 9, Final Fantasy Tactics*, Chrono Cross*, Xenogears*, Grandia, Star Ocean 2nd Story, Suikoden 1, Suikoden 2, Wild Arms (you can get this from the PS store), Final Fantasy Chronicles (FF4 and Chrono Trigger*), Final Fantasy Anthologies(FF5 and FF6*), Persona 1, Persona 2 (both these games are kind of strange, and kind of a different "taste" than some of the others)... There are others, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

PS2: Final Fantasy X*, Final Fantasy 12 (not the best FF, but I still liked it), Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud 2*, Dark Cloud (these are more Action/RPG), Suikoden 3, Grandia 2 (a lot of people didn't like it, I did)

As I said, some of those will be near impossible to find for a decent price, but they are the best ones I can remember off the top of my head.

edit: btw, my personal favorite game of all time is Xenogears. Best story of any RPG I've ever played. (which is why I was very disappointed in the Xenosaga games, even though they probably wouldn't be so bad otherwise)

Enchanted arms is not FF technically or Suikoden for story quality, but it's fun, there's a lot to explore, you have dozens of golems you can summon so your team will change frequently, with new abilities ; there's a combat grid with some mild strategy to move your characters and choose a powerful attack aiming at one traget or a lesser aiming at 2 to 9 squares ... some golems are hidden and very powerful, and a hidden dungeon. I've played it for 66 hours.

Enchanted Arms is ok. Not great, but its fun, and you can choose Japanese voice actors with subtitles so it hurts your ears less. Its also just $20. 8 is a good game. Its weird as heck for a FF, but its still good.

Get Final Fantasy 12 and Dragon Quest 8. Together they will suck your life away! Although Oblivion looks fantastic (got it yesterday for PS3 but don't get PS3 till tuesday...) I can't wait to be a thief and steal horses!

Oblivion is overrated.

It is a little overrated, but still, it'll suck you right in. Im addicted as hell. I think the expansion solves some of the problems included within the original game i.e. monotony.
