"As german site inplaystation.de reports, downward compatibility for the 40GB PS3 will be available this october via firmware upgrade. They talked to a Sony importer from germany who told them, Sony is going to release a new firmware which allows a fully software emulation of PS2 games."

Since Sony announced that they're going to offer downloadable PS2 games in PSN, this rumor sounds believable."

Good news for 40GB owners if true.

What good is a 40GB if you're gonna be downloading full PS2 games on top of PSN games, DLC, game data, and game saves. Time to upgrade those HDD's, people!

Great because those of us with 40GB PS3's bought them just to be able to play last gen games. I'm all about current and future gaming. I'll pass!

That will mark the 2 year anniversary of the PS3 being out... I dont know, seems a bit late. I would have thought most people would have stopped playing PS2 games this late into the PS3s life cycle. Guess im not "hardcore".

Why would anyone wait until October for this when they can get the superior 80 GB B/C in 9 days?

GARRYTH

Well the 40GB didn't have ANY PS2 parts whereas the 80GB had like a couple or one part of the PS2 which allowed it to emulate. But now Sony is doing completely software.

I have no problem with software emulation as long as it plays PS2 games.

Yeah, they could just write data onto the Hard Drive I guess?

It would be cool, but I'm kinda skeptical.

P.S. G-Legend, how have you played LittleBigPlanet?

This is not new news. Sony had already stated that they were going to pring PS2 games to PSN and that the emulation would be on a game by game basis in the form of a wrapper...the same method the xbox 360 currently uses for its BC. In other words, the PSN games will run, but no others. This is not a blanket BC. Sony was telling the truth....it is technically very difficult to bring program a completely software emulator that would require compatibility with so many games. However, on a game by game basis emulation is extremely easy, since each game has its own customized emulator.

This is in response to the fact that Xbox-Live classics are extremely popular and making lots of money. BTW, the press release for above info was released around the time firmware 2.3 came out if you want to do the search.

How would the 40 gb play ps2 games when it has neither the hardware or the software to do so? I dont think its possible for a firmware update to enable backwards compatibility.

Firmware is irrelevent, nor is an independent software or hardware necessary. Each game will contain an a wrapper that runs as a program on the PS3 (just like every other program..games included), which contains a customized PS2 emulator specifically written for that game. It is done the same way I can play PS1 and PS2 games on my pc, just like every other game console ever created. The xbox 360 has no xbox hardware in it for emulation, which is why each xbox game must download a microsoft provided emulator in order for it to run. With enough time, they could in fact develop a full software emulator that could support almost all of the PS2 games, but your talking about development that requires time and money...so its unlikely to happen. On PSN, your talking about a handful of games, almost all of which are going to be first party (due to licensing problems). Almost guaranteed to happen. The only question is which games will be licensed for PSN use.

I don't want to download games all overagain through PSN that I have already bought... No thanks. Maybe they might implement some kind of system that would let us get it for free through PSN. But I doubt it.

I should have waited for the 80 gigs to restock :(

Exactly. I personally got the 40GB when the 80GB got discontinued (coming back in MGS4 bundle obviously.) Also great way to save $100:D

For those saying it is impossible for the 40gb PS3 to have PS2 BC, it is possible. The process is software emulation, the 80GB already does half of this. The portion that is already emulated by the 80GB is the emotion engine, which was a chip that tricked the PS3 into emulating the PS2 hardware. The only part that is hardware based is the graphics processor.

I would imagine though emulating the PS2 hardware/graphics processor is not an easy task due to the system architecture of the PS3. Sometimes in fact most times older technology does not play nice with newer technology, and can create weird anomalies that are really difficult to solve.

is it even possible, doesnt the 80gb/60gb have different parts to let you play it? id be down for it, but i figure by the time it comes out (if it does) it will be a loooong time just like every other gimmick sony has promised (not that they promised this, just covering my tracks). I dont think ill be interested in playing PS2 games in 2010 ;)

Sounds sketchy but i hope it happens also it would be a bad idea for sony to confirm it since 60gb models are still on sale so dont expect anything until either 60gb price drop or they are sold out.

Sweet, I'll finally be able to play God of War 1-2 and MGS 2-3. I hope it works for PS2 games on DVD and not just downloaded games, because god knows how long it will take them to release all games on PSN.

If this is true then perhaps good news for people who have yet to own a PS3 and are looking to own one(yay for me).... I don't necessarily want it to use it to ps2 games but clearly having this function is a bonus.. anyway, I really need to know how to up those HDDs... the 60GB that we in the gaming club own is seriously running out of space :(
