If true, I'm all for it :). I'll be more happy with my PS3 Slim and can finally put my 60GB to rest before it YLOD.

Yea, you can download the PS2 Memory Card with the Slim :). It's in the PSN Store, unless you prefer to use the actual memory card :). Definitely awesome, and almost sure they will do this. I mean, PS2 is right at the end of it's mark ;) so hopefully they will do this. That would be super awsome. if its true I want internal memory cards and Dual Shock 3 support

eh it's just a patent, while It would obviously be awesome and I think it would sell pretty crazy. Patents for video game hardware and such, rarely come out to be something.paradigm68
I guess so, it has more of a chance of coming out then the inflatable horse for wii though :D
It's a shame Sony removed BC. but this is just stupid. unless this thing includes some nifty feature like being able to decently upscale any and all PS2 games to display on an HD screen. But then it would probably cost a bit more than $50 if it included a decoder chip capable of upscaling to 1080p. I'm not even sure how this would connect, via USB???
PS2 is $99 brand new in box. Even if this type of external device were $50 I'd rather just buy another PS2. I can't imagine anything like this being less than $50. What's the point of such a new device if you would still have to have 2 boxes connected anyway? Who wants to burn up their $300 PS3 console by playing old PS2 games through it???
I actually hope this is false. Because if true it just makes Sony look like money grubbing fools for removing the feature from PS3, then selling a separate device having you pay for hardware to get the backwards compatibility back. I like the way it is now, just keep PS2 and PS3 separate and do a remaster for some of the classic games. I quite like the idea of HD remasters because they promise improved performance not just in visuals, but in framerate compared to an emulated game which would still have the same framerate issues as the original.
So sony may be giving PS3 owners their very own Sega CD?! Well, since I already have a ps2 (Three actually) I'll pass, it's a cool alternative for people who don't already have a PS2 or backwards compatible PS3. If they market this though, I hope it's like $30 or something, I mean if it's $100 might as well buy the PS2.
Would buy it in a heartbeat, ever since my launch 60gig died i've really missed playing PS2 games upscaled with a DS3..
I wouldn't worry about it. Sony patented PS2 BC through Cell Technology over a year ago..It's a shame Sony removed BC. but this is just stupid. unless this thing includes some nifty feature like being able to decently upscale any and all PS2 games to display on an HD screen. And how much will this cost? $70? A secondhand ps2 slim can be bought for as little as $20.... I see no reason for this and suspect it's a fake or rumours that came from the ol' "He said that she said that he said that etc etc etc..."JohnF111...it's a patent. Do you know what that is? Also lots would pay at least up to $100 to get a PS2 BC device. I don't have room on my monitor for another input, or the space for the system. So yes it would be awesome.
It means the PS3 able to play PS2 and PS1 games. We're talking about them trying to bring back BC for the PS2 games. (all PS3s can already do PS1 games)What's PS3 BC?:|

pretty dumb idea, tbvh.
I mean really....you might as well buy a freaking PS2.....all over again.
Let me get this straight, a seperate device that connects to a PS3?.......really Sony? And I heard it requires a seperate power source. Really?

That is the image from the patent.. So no if this thing is real and ever gets made then no, it wouldn't need an external power source... which makes it sound even worse.
But yeah, this is just a patent. Companies patent hundreds of things a year that they never make... This is a pretty pointless discussion to have at this point.
could be a very small device the size of a USB key and costing 20$, I don't see Sony putting much money into developing a PS2 BC device, so most likely it will not cost much
Well it would be highly unlikely that Sony would bother to bring back Backwards compatibility to PS3. I now have a "fabled 60giger" PS3. But I haven had much time to play PS3, or PS2, or Even PS1 games on it. Since I've been busy as of late. Sony just wants to keep a hold of the "All time sales record" for the Playstation 2 currently at 142 million consoles sold? or something to that effect. While the PS3 is just under 39 million. Sony has figured that most people in the world don't care about BC in PS3. I do but most people don't. I finally hunted down a 60giger PS3 since I will still buy PS2 & PS1 as well as PS3 games even today in 2010. Most people do not have 295 games. 124 are current gen the rest are from the 3 previous gens.
Most people only have 7-12 games tops of the current gen. Sony has figured out that BC is not important to people anymore. (except a few like me) So they are happy to still make PS2 consoles. Even thought if they did have BC in PS3 people would like it. (I do since I did bother to find and buy a PS3 60giger) Even though I have a 120giger slim and before I had the PS3 40giger (which did me fine) but I am one of the few people that cares about BC/PS3 since I had gotton the 60giger. So it would be good if Sony did do this.
But they won't even thought it would save Sony some cash. Just make another chip or BC via a software update. Sony wants to hold onto the "All time record" Nintendo will eventually overtake with the Wii or DS line. Plus Sony wants people to buy the new stuff. With PS Move now released they will want you to buy that. Sony has to think about its bottom line. Not worry about pleasing true gamers. They want the casual market. So BC is not on Sony's list.
sigh...
So they took out a feature to sell it back to us later? Brilliant!istuffedsunny
Pretty much.
"Buh Buh big bad evil Microsoft is the only company capable of ripping people off"
Really Sony?....you're unable to have a online software update through PSN?

They can't just make it a software thing, that's why the PS3s that could do the full BC had the chip. You should probably just Google this up before you start yelling random things. What's PS3 BC?:|
