I don't think they'll increase the price. If they do release an 80GB model, they'll probably keep that one at $600 and drop the price of the 60GB and 20GB models.

I think theyll drop the price to 60GB: $500, 20GB: $400. that would be nice. It will then be competitive with the premium 360.

never thought of that... very true. if Sony were to do this, they could add more accessories to the 80GB, similar to what Microsoft did with the 360. they could possibly throw in a bluetooth headset and an HDMI cable. so for $100, you're getting +20GB, bluetooth headset, and an HDMI cable.

Well Microsoft "debunked" the Xbox Elite rumors for months before they finally came out and announced it officially.

Sony doesnt need to release a 80gig HDD. You can buy a standard 2.5 laptop HDD and put it in your PS3 without vioding your waranty. They built the PS3 so that you can upgrade the HDD without any problems. And "Cheaper" than M$'s way of upgrading thier proprietary hardware.

Of course Sony is gonna say that they aren't releasing another version of PS3, the last thing they want is for people not to buy the current versions, waiting until the 80GB arrives.

it doesnt need to compete with the 360, its kicking its ass in europe and japan, as well as pretty much equall ing it in america. it doesnt need to cpmpete.

The gamespot article yesterday, and everything else I've read about it seems legit. However, as the gamespot article pointed out, it is likely that Sony will borrow a page from the iPod's playbook and add the larger hard drive without changing the price. That means, that there won't be a 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB model all available at different prices. The 80GB model will be $600 and it will be the STANDARD. And I'll bet that a year from now Sony releases a 100 GB model for the same price. I think this is GREAT. It means that Sony is committed to offering the best possible gaming experience, not just the best possible gaming experience available on launch day. It PROVES that Sony has committed to a strategy for the LONG-TERM. Gamers who bought the 60GB should not be miffed at Sony because they could have gotten the 80GB for the same price. Sony has made it cheap and easy to increase your hard drive space and you should feel satisfied that you got the best possible system for the price, at the time. You wouldn't be upset if you bought the system for $600 and then saw a price drop. THis is essentially the same thing, except Sony has decided to NOT pass the savings of cheaper technolgoy onto the consumers. Instead the reinvested it in their system. It is a GREAT thing. I'll repeat, there will NOT be 3 different models available. Once the 80GB comes out, they will stop making the 60GB. They may be available at a discounted price, WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. But that's it.

It'd be silly to do this. I know the manufacturing costs of the PS3 are dropping but why make a whole new system model? Leave that to other companies. The fact that you can pop in a larger hard drive anytime you want is enough. If someone wants the 80 gig drive let em buy it separate.

It would not be silly to do this. Sony believes that their system is selling very well at its current price point (its selling faster than the Xbox 360) and they believe that it will continue to do so at least through the next X-mas season. There is absolutely no reason to drop the price unless sales growth begings to plateau, which it absolutely has NOT. What would be SILLY is for Sony to just pocket the extra cake derived from cheaper manufacturing. But instead they have REINVESTED that money in their system. It's not going to be a "Choice" like with the 360. The 80GB is going to be the Standard. Later on down the road, Sony will find that the 80GB is getting cheaper to make so then they will have to make another decision. Is it time to cut the price? Or should they reinvest in the system again?
