There are rumours of a next gen Shenume 3 game being made as soon as the author of the original shenmue games for the dreamcast has finished his current projects. If anyone has played the originals do you think that it would be best suited on the PS3 instead of any other console. With the potential amount of space available on the blu-ray discs the full shenmue story could be fitted on 1 disc.

While I would absolutely go nuts if Shenmue 3 was announced and buy whatever console it was for, regardless of price, I don't see it happening. The first two, while selling modestly well, just weren't enough for Sega I guess. There is a Shenmue MMORPG coming out...but, I don't know.....doesn't seem like a good idea.

i have seen some info on shenmue online but it still doesn't end the story. Only when Shenmue 3 is released will we see the next chapter of the story. The rumours are that Shenmue 3 will be made once Shenmue online is released. If there is enough response and judging by the petitions that are going around then surely Sega can't ignore the demand for the next chapter of Shenmue. Hopefully this will be on the PS3 as this will be the best format for the games to be finished.

Maybe projects as big as this only ever get announced is when they eventually saved enough money to fund it. Maybe they have a budget and they put a bit of money into a pile every now and then and when they reached that budget is when they decide to start work. Thats what I would do so your not investing all you money into one project that might go over budget and they never recouperate.

Sega won't allow a game as popular as Shenmue just end as it hsa with Shenmue 2 not finishing the story. We need Shenmue 3 and Sega know that, but we have to remember that the person who created Shenmue is also in charge of games like Virtual Fighter 5 and others like that.

It's possible, so long as Yu Suzuki is in Sega (though he's not a part of AM2, from what I gather). Still, the game Yakuza seems to share some similarities to Shenmue and was well received...perhaps that will convince Sega to give it another go.

They should release a commemorative 2-pack with both Shenmue 1 and 2 in it for PS2.

And I think MGS is boring...yay for personal tastes. If they did make a Shenmue 3, it would be nice if they could emulate the DC and include 1 and 2 on the disc, given how much Blu ray can store.

I loved Shenmue, but Shenmue 2 was abysmal, I don't think I'd be bothered if there was or wasn't a Shenmue 3, the story isnt that interesting

I played Shenmue II on my brother's XBOX 360, and I thought it was one of the best games to ever come out on the 360, I was wondering if they were going to make another one, and if they decide to make a Shenmue III, I hope it will be on the PS3.

I pray that Yu Suzuki finds someone to release Shenmue 3. Shenmue 1 didn't do so well cuz it was on a dying system. Shenmue 2 didn't sell well cuz it was on the Xbox and now he's stuck with publishers thinking it's a bad investment. I could guarantee that if Shen2 came out on ps2, it woulda been a greatest hits title. Last I heard, the entire saga was completed and Shenmue 3's gameplan was also fully executed. He first had to finish the Shenmue MMO that is releasing in China then tackle who would back him up on releasing Shen3.

You can bet that if the last installment didn't sell well enough to justify the cost, they'll drop the story like a hot potato.  If the last one were really that popular, we would have seen the next one by now.

If sega dropped the project then I am sure the person who created shenmue would of taken it somewhere else. He has always stated from day 1 that he wanted to complete the story from start to finish. Sega can't affors to let this game slip. This game is what kept the dreamcast alive that little bit longer. In fact it is possibly the only reason y i never sold my dreamcast when i bought my ps2.
The Shenmue story is one that unfortunately started on a dying console and even when they ported shenmue 2 to the xbox, i believe that Sega missed a trick by not porting it to the PS2 especially as Sega are a japenese company whereas xbox is an american product. Surely Sega can learn from that mistake and release Shenmue 3 on both PS3 and X360 and hopefully included the original games on the PS3 version so that we can play the whole game from the beginning so that people who haven't played either 1 or 2 know what the game is about and don't miss out on what was probably the best game of the 128bit era (last gen consoles).

As that link says, rumoured! I personally would love to see it released on the PS3 and X360 as I don't want to buy an x360 just to finish the shenmue story. I have contacted Sega of Japan via the shenmue site and am hopefully waiting for a reply if the email address on the website is still active. May have to email sega separately to see what their plans are. Also there are numerous petitions with regards Shenmue 3. Prehaps we should start a petition to try and get Sony to buy the rights to the game as this maybe the only way we can convince sega to produce the game for the PS3 aswell as the x360.

I want Shenmue 3 for PS3. Why? Because for god's sake, I need an ending Sega! I hate them for having the first two games available on Dreamcast (I had to import #2 from EU). Why on PS3? Cause I already have a PS3 and dont want to buy an Xbox. They better make a Shenmue 3 for PS3. As for the Shenmue MMO... ditch it. Why create a Shenmue MMO when very few people will play it. It wont have the following that WoW has. It would be basically Shenmue fans from the Dreamcast days jumping on and because it's not even the same type of game, they would get sick of it quickly. At least, I would.

When you said "the maker of the series" i stopped caring, any and every shenmue fan should know its Yu Suzuki that make shenmue 1&2,he is currently working on shenmue online although we have no idea when it is coming out or if it has even been canned (again), but More to the point i think it would be on 360 not ps3,i'm sure Microsoft would want it as an exclusive to help boost sales in Japan.

when i said the creator of the series, i couldn't remember the name of the creator.

Anyway Shenmue 3 would probably be better for Sega if it is released on both PS3 and x360 as it would be more sensible financially if this happened. If Sega has some sense they will do this and hopfully port the originals over to the ps3 in a full story on blu-ray or include them as an emulator of the blu-ray for ps3.

iirc, shenmue was 16 chapters. The first game covered chapters 1-2 and shen2 covered 3-8 or something like that. I really don't remember...been a long time since I've researched it. The only reason Shen3 is rumored for x360 is because the game is still a rumor and shen2 was picked up exclusively for the xbox...which was such a foolish move by Yu Suzuki. I recommend importing the UK version of Shen2 if you have a dreamcast but no xbox. The game is fantastic. About Yakuza, I too thought it felt like it was borrowing influences from Shenmue. Of course, it wasn't even close to matching the epicness of it but it was a nice attempt. The only thing that'll suck with shen3 is that I won't be able to use my shen2 data. Shen 1 and 2 are probably the only RPGs I've played through completion more than twice each. I think together, I've played the two of them over 6 times.

I have to agree with you there raven. I still have my dreamcast set up just for shenmue 1 and 2. If Yu Suzuki does realize that he made a mistake by not bringing shenmue to the ps2 then hopefully he will rectify that with shenmue 3. Also lets hope that he does realize his mistake and uses the blu-ray capacity for ps3 to include the first 2 games and that way we could have the whole saga on 1 disc

edited on 24/2/07. Still no word from sega of japan with regards the game. hopefully they have received my email and hopefully they will reply.
