Try taking out your HD and then putting it back in. I've heard it's a temporary fix for the less severe cases of the yellow light, otherwise, I think you'll have to send it in.

You can't really replace the HDD if you can't turn on the PS3 in the first place.

Even if it was just the HDD failing you couldn't just buy a new one and pop it in. None of the PS3 software would exists on your new HDD...it would just be a blank HDD. Unfortunately , I think you're going to have to call and send your PS3 in.

NO, Look it may be wise to just buy a hard drive and try it. If it doesn't work send it in for repair and you still have a larger hard drive to use when it returns.

I upgraded my drive,

ran back up

removed hard drive

took new hard drive out of the anti static bag and put it directly in the PS3.

turned the PS3 on

message "hard drive needs to be formatted" pressed ok

Ps3 formatted the new drive rebooted and wallah like a brand new PS3 EDIT ( forgot to mention when the PS3 formats the drive it also installs the dash )

ran recovery now I have 250gigs with all my data.

If you don't have a back up you'll loose game saves and have to redownload items you got off PSN. If you say it works for a few minunites it's most likely the harddrive. Pop the cover off the harddrive bay and point a fan at it to keep the drive as cool as possible and you may be able to get some data off it.

$60 for 250 gigs is not gonna break the bank in most cases, or $40 for 120 gigs. Also note the reviews from multiple PS3 owners.

TRUST me this is the best deal 500 gigs for $90. $30 more than that $60 250 and you get double the space.

Dunno why you guys would think it's the harddrive. If the harddrive disconnected you'd see :"cannot start. The correct harddisk was not found" if it was corrupted you'd see :"The Hard Disks file system is corrupted and will be restored". From what I've heard YLOD is usually a general hardware failure, which could mean anything from the power supply to the gpu is either toast or no longer properly connected.

Turning it on without the harddrive would be a good clue if the error message is displayed, If it were the power supply or gpu it wouldn't come on and he wouldn't be seeing the dash. You can have a corrupt file system and still have a good hard drive. The fact it comes on to me indicates a hard drive. I have seen bad hard drives work until they warm up, which would explain why his PS3 works for a moment then while running quits working hence the yellow light and not an error message. Just saying it wouldn't hurt to try espiecally if he was thinking about getting a bigger hard drive.

Hopefully if you try a new drive you will post the resaults.

Is he getting the dashboard or is he just getting it to turn on for 30 secs with no picture? But if it is with a dash board just taking the HD out and looking for the no drive message would probably be better than him going out and buying a new drive (right away) if chances are it won't work either way.
