SEGA leaks Sony's plans for PS2 and Dreamcast emulation on PS3

SEGA has let a pretty fat cat out of the bag by releasing confidential notes from a meeting with Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Sony wants to release all PS2 games on the PlayStation 3, according to a meeting between SEGA America and SCEA.

The meeting was held on August 5th, with comments regarding SEGA's PS3 and PSP releases, as well as Sony's plans for the console in the near future.

There's mention of a big announcement at the back half of this year, which we now know is thePS3 Slim and price cut.However, there's finally confirmation that Sony is interested inemulating all PlayStation 2 games.

The notes reveal that "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN." Whether this will come as a case by case basis, like theGod of War remastering,or that Sony is creating a universal emulator for all PS3 models is unknown. We'd personally expect the former, since Grand Theft Auto Vice City is a specific title mentioned.

Since this meeting was held in August of this year, the PS3 Slim and its hardware would have been in the company's mind - so there must be plans to overcome the difficulties of the missing PS2 GPU.

There's also mention of how these games would be marketed, with PS3 controllers shown in PS2 TV ads.

The link to this confidential information, which was on SEGA's personal FTP, is now broken, but can be foundvia NeoGAF.

[UPDATE]- Another exciting titbit is that SEGA could provide Sony with Dreamcast titles for the PS3.

The publisher has been tasked with providing SCEA a list of titles so that they can choose which games they're interested in having exclusively. It is further added that "if we give them a long period of exclusivity they'll give us more marketing support."

Nice. Would certainly give me access to some of those rarer titles that are too expensive on Ebay. Also would love to get my hands on some Dreamcast titles like Skies of Arcaida and that Jet Set Radio game. Hopefully this is true.

That would be cool. Some PS2 games are getting kind of rare and expensive, it would be nice to just download them. But considering the rate at which the PS1 titles are trickling out, it would probably be 2035 before they got around to the obscure titles I'd be interested in.

It's going to boil down to timing. Even if the PS2 is selling well, what about software? What about titles that are out of print, forcing potential buyers to GameStop's used bins and eBay? Sony isn't getting any money from that. They aren't going to sit back and watch that forever.

Sony knows the interest is there. Do you really think they're going to deny themselves, and pubs/devs deny themselves, the money that would come from releasing these games on PSN? Not gonna happen, folks.

Perhaps when the inevitable dual analog PSP2 hits. Downloadable PS2 games on a dual analog PSP2 would be awesome, and would be a perfect time to do such a thing.

It'll happen. PS2 games will be all over the store one of these days. It may not be for quite a while, but it'll happen. It's about when, not if.

My 60G PS3 got da YLoD last month and I couldn't justify spending £145 for Sony to repair, so I traded for a 80G.

I still hadn't finished Ico or FFXII so B/C for all models would be absolutly spiffing!

There's too much potential profit not to do it. I agree it is just a timing of when. The PS2 is still pushing a lot of systems (amazes me even) and until that slows down, they'll continue to profit off the hard copies instead of the digital ones.

the only way i would buy PS2 games on the PSN is if it has online..

take baldur's gate dark alliance one of my favorite PS2 games.. but if i can't play online coop then forget it..

And i doubt they will add online for games because they would take away the online for actual PS3 games.. Therefore i don't care..

I just don't see Sony doing full software emulation for 2 reasons. 1 they want to make money from the old PS2 classics so they would prefer to remaster them and sell them retail or on the PSN store. 2 100% software emulation would probably hurt BC with a lot of games. Most games wouldn't run that smooth and probably have a lot of bugs plus sony would have to spend too much resources to fix them. I definitely see them bringign the classics back but through remastering on the PSN and then selling them for a profit.

I didn't get much time with my Dreamcast as a kid, so if this is true then it's excellent news.

Here's hoping for an updated Shenmue, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, and Sonic Adventure :D

Just as a matter of interest could 3rd party publsihers release PS2 games on the *other* consoles or Xbox games on the PS3?

Id do this squarely for Skies of arcadia and Grandia II

I hope this is comes to pass. Another sweet deal (regarding Dreamcast) comes to mind, if they could emulate Dreamcast on PS3 for us that own Dreamcast games. Pop a Dreamcast disk in your PS3? That would be awesome. I miss Capcom vs SNK and my Dreamcast is screwed up:P

People said the PSP Go couldn't be true because it was just a rumor, but it happened anyway.

People said it was too early for a slim PS3 to be released, since the slim PS2 took longer to come out, but that also happened. Seriously, what kind of logic is that anyway? The PS2 didn't need to be remade so soon since they were ahead. Sony's PS3 was an entirely different case with their competition getting the better of them.

Now here we are again, with yet another rumor that's pretty obvious will also happen. Sony said themselves they were looking into adding more than just PlayStation branded games to the PSN, so this Dreamcast thing shouldn't seem so impossible. Also keep in mind that, when they said they wanted to release all of the PS2 games on PSN, they didn't mean all at once... (Duh...)

I'm really looking forward to this, because there are a crapload of quality PS2 games. Especially RPG's.
