I want to get a spare battery for my psp and there are many batteries (unofficial-3rd pary) on ebay. Is it safe to buy these without having to worry about them damaging my psp?

Buy a first party one, read the listing carefully, that sig is uber creepy, and check all recent feedback.

I've heard about some third party batteries melting if left charging too long...thus ruining your PSP.  I bought a third party one, and although I haven't had any serious problems, there are two annoyances:

1.  The battery life is a LOT shorter.  If I get about 6-7 hours on the normal psp battery, I probably get 2-3 max for the same rating on a third party battery.

2.  The PSP's battery meter doesn't correctly monitor how much battery life is in my third party battery....ex:  It will show that I am still at one bar left with 40% left (or something similar) and ZAP, the psp turns off as the battery has died.

Just stick with the official batteries if you can...they are less hassle, safer, last longer, but yes..more expensive.  It's worth the extra money though to ensure your psp doesn't get ruined though ;)

I have had none of the above problems so far with my third party battery:
the battery life is almost as long as a regular one; the battery life display has always been correct this far.

You always have to be careful buying from Ebay or any other auction site.

If your unsure then buy a official Sony battery.
