So today, my ps3 died on me, sadly it was the most annoying day ever!!!!!!!! since I dont have cable tv or another dvd player in my apartment, and being a student means my gf and I are poor as hell!!!!!!!!

So, what would you guys do? I don't have warranty because my 40gb fat model was the first one out on release, so it's over 3 years old! Would it be beneficial for me to just by a slim? or get it repaired?

Oh, and I would clean it out and take care of it every week, so this wouldn't happen!

what do you guys think?

I feel u but if u want to keep your backwards compatibility, call Sony and see if they have replacement models of the same SKU. Actually, go through Sony. Yea, u will have to wait a while but $150 and change is a lot better than $299 plus change or whatever used model costs are. My original 60GB PS3 had the optical drive issue but Sony replaced it free of charge calling it goodwill since it was a month past my warranty expiration but then the YLOD got me 8mos later and I had to pay. They couldn't fix it but I got a BRAND SPANKING NEW 60GB SKU as a replacement. Check them out, first, and see what they say.

I think u said it was a 40GB model so it dont have BC. But anyways if you send it to sony they charge you 150bucks. Your best thing to do is fix it yourself theres alot of guides on this site. If you cant seem to fix it then better buy a new slim.

Do you know what's wrong with your ps3? If its something easy to fix, then do it. Otherwise just buy a new slim.

Call Sony and see what they say before buying another ps3. But the slim is sexy.

buy a new slim and sell your ps3 for spare parts on ebay some people get quite a bit of money back on broken ps3s this way you recoup some money while getting a brand new ps3

hahah, it's ridiculous! My ps1 is in the best condition ever and I was playing xenogears the other day, but the point is, I don't believe I should be spending money on a faulty system! It wasn't my fault it burnt out, I always took care of it! I just find it annoying....

But I did write sony an email about it, and I informed them that I don't think I should pay for the costs of th repair, since it's not my fault the ps3 was faulty! I am really hating gaming consoles right now! GGGGRRRRRR

I actually stared to question whether he had BC because it was vague in my head as to whether that SKU had it. It was so long ago. Lol

No, my model is not the BC one... I wish! I would be playing more ps2 games than anything! I really want to play SotC! lol, but yah, it's an older model. I think mine came out a couple of months after the launch!

If your truly desperate for having a ps3 then go fix it. But if you can gather some money you can get a new slim model.

You could do the easy route and buy a pay as you go ps3. Its gonna end up costing you almost 2 ps3s if you don't pay it out fast though, but youll have your ps3 back for a few bucks.

I'm surprised since the PS3 40 giger was supposed to be one of the better PS3 models? I had one and it never gave me any problems. I guess every batch of PS3 can die.Since it is not the Epic60 giger or arare20 giger. Then get another PS3. The slim is good (thus far)

i think you should buy a new ps3 because if you get the old one fixed its just gone cause more problems and has a higher % rate to break down again.

Sony has some trade-in thing (sort of), where you can send in your broken system and pay between $100-$150 (I forget exactly, I've never done it, but have spoken to a Sony rep about it) and they will send you a refurbished Slim model. That's an option if you don't want to pay the full $299 for a Slim or have your system fixed (which for a 40 GB system I do not think is worth it).

The problem is that you will not get a full 1 year warranty with that system they send you. I do not have very good experiences with refurbished products, but that's up to you. Hope this helps.

Whats with these "my fat PS3 is dead" topics? Maybe they have a limited life span of 3-4 years?

The purpose of this life span is the fact that I still have my ps1 that still works... but I buy a system that was about 600 something and it should last at least sometime in my opinion!

If the repair is going to be expensive, then a Slim bundle is your friend.
