first off both microsoft and hideo kojima (MSG creator) have CONFIRMED that MGS4 is NOT coming to the 360. Microsoft begrudgingly admitted this in an interview with 1up.com at this past E3... look it up on their site if you dont believe me.
Your friend is biased and wants you to buy a 360 because he has one and wants to a) have a friend to own a 360 possibly to play online with b) to validate his own decision in buying one. I suggest you get the system YOU want to get with games YOU want. If you like FPSs then the 360 is probably for you. Yes, there are other games than FPSs on that system BUT a majority of the GOOD games for that system are FPSs. Think about the games this year that got the best reviews on that system: Halo 3, Bioshock, Orange Box, COD4, hell even Mass Effect is shooter as far as its combat is concerned.
I think the PS3 has bit more diversity in types of games: Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk. And judging from 360s failure in japan youre definately gonna get more JRPGs on the PS3...
Buy the system if you want games for it. The PS3 isn't going anywhere. Its still gonna be around when MSG4 comes out. If there arent many games you want now, wait until there are enough for you to feel comfortable buying one. I'm willing to bet youre gonna buy one when MSG4 comes out though, just a hunch.
This is absolutely the best time to get a PS3, because the promised titles at launch date are finally coming to fruition.
UT3 - this won't be coming to XBox until late 2008 or 2009. Even then it's debatable whether user created content will be available on XBL.
Haze
MGS4
Final Fantasy XIII
Gran Turismo HD
Socom
Killzone 2
Tekken 6
None of the above franchises (with the exception of UT) will see the light of day on the 360. Aso if history is any indicator, the best Japanese RPG ports will be likely be only available on PS3.
Not to mention if you want a high def player with the most potential you already get one with the PS3.
Lastly, if you're a FPSer, PS3 supports kb/mouse right out of the box (you have to buy a $100 accessory for XBox to use a kb/mouse). Granted only UT is slated for supporting a kb/mouse right now, but more and more games will use the API to support it.
I really want to play MGS4 but seriously I dont want to buy a system just for one game. Oh yea and maybe Drake's Fortune. But what else? unless you can use it for blurays as well.... i would hold off on buying the PS3 until the summer atleast. there is just not enough draw when it comes to games right now, unless you dont own a 360.
if you do NOT own a 360, then yes by all means buy a ps3... or even a 360. there are tons of really amazing multiplat games to play right now.

neither FFXIII or Killzone 2 are coming out any time in the near future. Killzone 2 probably wont even make it in 08 (it will be delayed, mark my words), and FFXIII is definitely NOT coming out in '08 (square pretty much already said that). GT HD isnt coming soon either... In fact, the only games i can see that are or may be coming soon are HAZE and MGS4. Tekken 6 is coming out who knows when, there isnt even a date in 08 yet.
if all you want one for is MGS4 which isn't scheduled for release until Q2 2008, then wait...most of the next-gen. games are over hyped anyways, but i'm enjoying most of them for what they are...wait for the real reviews, then decide?
i'm really looking forward to GT5 but i bought NG:S, HS, R&C, Nascar 08, Uncharted, Motorstorm & F1:CE all of which i enjoy and recommend to a certain point...imo the PS3 is a sweet system that'll be even sweeter when the rumble controller become avail., :P
don't forget about the blu-ray player, although i really don't use it...standard dvd's look fantastic to me using the PS3 (my 50" plasma pioneer might have something to do with it also) but it's there if you what to use it and the free online access aswell!
so if you're a gamer and have the money, get it or wait (what else can anybody tell you)...it is worth it!

While it's true there's no definitive dates released I don't think the market could bear being without an FF, or GT for 2+ years. It just hasn't happened. I mean I know the dev kits were late but I see it as unlikely for any of the titles mentioned to stretch to 2009 (maybe Tekken). Killzone is launching a playable beta "soon" (which I interpret as sometime in the first half of the year) so i expect the final to be not very far behind as well (surely not as far out as 09). GT Prologue is ready now so I don't think there's any doubt GTHD will make it out in 08. Tekken may be up in the air but I think the rest are pretty much guaranteed an 08 release.
there is no way it will go to 360..but besides that other good games are:
Killzone 2
Warhawk
Ratchet And Clank
GT5
and plus the blu ray player is nice

And out of the those shooter games, you can find bioshock, Orange Box, and COD4 on PC (even on PS3 for two out of the three) with better graphics and controls.
Since your friend already got an Xbox360, why buy another one? Why not buy a ps3 and you guys can trade systems with each to play games you (or him) would otherwise never be able to play?
I'm currently living with a friend who owns an xbox360, and he's glad that I got a ps3 so he can play heavenly sword (which he thinks is better than Ninja Gaiden by the way, cuz Ninja gaiden is way too hard for him).
"Should I consider buying a PS3"
No. You should not consider it. There's not much to consider. If you want to own the best gaming platform, then just go get a PS3. If you'd rather sit around waiting for your friends to convince you to buy something else, then do that instead.

Awesome post. Kudos, bro. I think it's amazing how people act like a system is a limited time offer thing.

It looks like your friends are Xbox360 fanboys. If that is the case I wouldn't trust them, if I were you.
Don't buy a PS3 just yet. Wait until MGS4 is available and see if there other games available you really want to play. And of course wait for the MGS4 (user)reviews.

Disclaimer:
I've had this post saved on a Word document for a while now since many people have been thinking about getting a PS3 recently :)
Yeah, I know it's a long post, but there have been so many threads about people thinking about getting a PS3 for a while now. Everytime, it turns out to be a simple question (probably much like yours, TC) about the different versions, or online play, or exclusives, or something else that the TC could find easily if they did a little research. One day, it got so bad that I did all the research for them, compiled all the information, saved it on a word document, and tried to get it stickied. However, the mod didn't "see a need for it," so I just copy and paste it whenever there is a new question thread (several times a day) and force feed the information to these lazy people (including you TC). It usually answers everyone's questions. If you have a question that needs an answer from someone who physically has the system, then OK, but otherwise, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH OR I WILL FORCE FEED IT TO YOU.
Here is a link to the GameSpot PS3 Console Resource Center. If you don't want to read all of that, then read this:
Should I get a PS3? Is it worth the money?
The answer is yes; definitely get a PS3
Of course it's worth the money and here's why:
Amazing PS3 Exclusives (currently out, and those to come):
You can't argue with that list; trust me, it's well worth the money
For a full list that I won't put here for the sake of space, go to this site
Plus, don't forget:
Online service is free,
It's the cheapest form of Blu-Ray player on the market. In fact, other Blu-Ray players on the market START at around $800, so if you got a PS3 exclusively as a Blu-Ray player, you'd still be getting 50%+ off compared to the competition.
Most have backwards compatibility (hurry, the 60GB models w/ the best B/C are going fast)
Check out that sick Walmart deal: (60GB PS3; Blu-Ray remote controller; and your choice of one game from a list including Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Resistance; all for $500!!)
[I actually might be missing something - they might actually be including component cable or HDMI cables; not sure, so check up on that]
What are the differences between the 4 SKUs (versions)?
You can check backwards compatibility for specific games here
60GB - limited availability, price somewhere near $400-$500 (depends where you get it from and what comes with it like bundles or value packs), uses the EE chip - 99% backwards compatibility, built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, SD, CF, and other flash card and memory slots/readers
80GB - $500 bundled w/ Motorstorm, uses software emulation (no EE chip)- 85% backwards compatibility (I've heard), built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, has flash card and memory slots/readers (like 60GB)
40GB - $400, no PS2 backwards compatibility, I've heard that it still has PS1 compatibility though, built in Wi-Fi, 2 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers
20GB - (I'm not sure if you can find this anymore),uses EE chip -99% backwards compatibility (like 60GB), 4 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers, no Wi-Fi (you need an Ethernet cable to play online)
If you've got a PS2 and it still works, there's not much reason to go with the 80GB instead of the 40GB except for Motorstorm (if you like it), and a couple of extra USB slots. The memory is upgradable anyway.
If you don't have a PS2 or if it's broken, and you still want to play PS2/PS1 games, get the 60GB if you can, or the 80GB if you can't find the 60GB.
If the memory slots are important to you, then your options are the 60GB or 80GB versions.
*Note: I went with the 60GB version before the price drop, and I don't regret the $600+ I spent at all.
***NOTE*** All PS3 versions have PS1 backwards compatibility. The 40GB version is the only one without some form of PS2 backwards compatibility.
What about the Online Service?
Online service on the PS3 (called the Playstation Network) is completely free.
The PS3 has the Playstation Store, where you can download free demos, videos, images, themes, and buyPS1 games, other arcade-like games, add-ons to PS3 games, and entire PS3 games (the only two available right now are Warhawk and Tekken 5).
I know that you can get TV shows and movies from Xbox Live, and the Playstation Network will be doing something like soon. The PS3 is also compatible with DivX movies from your PC and you can get movies on your PS3 that way.
Sony is due to release Home in Q1 2008; it's a virtual world where you can create and customize an avatar and a home for your avatar (ala The Sims). Also, you can access stuff from the Playstation Store in virtual shops, hang out at public spaces with other online PS3 users, and play virtual arcade games. You can text chat using your PS3 remote or keyboard or voice chat using a Bluetooth headset. You can invite your new-made friends back to your private home and share music and videos saved on your PS3, and even invite them to play multiplayer games together. There will also to be a trophy system comparable to the Xbox Live achievement point system, and you can display your trophies at you private place. In short, Home is AWESOME!
Here is a Gametrailers.com 25 minute Home walkthrough
Also, Sony is expected to make the Cross Media Bar (XMB) available to you while playing games online. It willhopefully be in one of the next few updates.Until then, however, the online format depends on the game (Resistance has a perfect format IMO).
On the XMB, once you log in to Playstation online account, you can see your buddy list, whether or not your buddies are online and what they're playing if they are online. You can send them a message orinvite them toa chat room where you can use voice chat. You can also access saved music and videos from your XMB and hopefully this will soon be available in-game.
Most online games have voice chat and the quality depends on the headset. I have the headset that came bundled with Warhawk when I bought it from the store (for a total of $60, it saves $20 over getting them individually). It's works great.
I've had my PS3 since January 2007, and have experienced minimal (little to no) lag online or other problems in general. I've heard from others on this site with both the PS3 and 360 who have said that the gamers on Xbox Live are less mature and there is a lot more racism and cursing on Xbox Live than on the Playstation Network.
Even though I've never played on Xbox Live, I've heard from people who have used both that Xbox Live isn't that much better than the Playstation Network.I really want to play MGS4 but seriously I dont want to buy a system just for one game. Oh yea and maybe Drake's Fortune. But what else? I am seriously considering buying one but all of my friends keep telling me that MGS will come to 360 as well. But I really dont want to rely on speculation. DonMega187Don't sit around wasting good gaming time just considering buying.Get yourself down to a local store right now and buy the PS3 right now-That's an order!
