Ok, so I am FINALLY getting my PS3 on Wednesday (been scraping together money for forever), and I am buying a few retail games for it right away.

But, I also want to download some games. I've noticed lately that Final Fantasy VII has been a huge hit since it came out. I'm also aware that it is one of the highest rated and most beloved videogames of all time since it's release on the PS1. But I've never played it before!

So, could I get some info from some of you who have played it? And do you think I would enjoy it? The only FF games that I have played are the first two (I own Dawn of Souls for my GBA), and I do like RPG's quite a bit.

So, please tell me why I should download the game (or shouldn't? ). Please don't just say "YES DOWNLOAD IT" or "NO IT SUCKS". Give me a little information on why it's so good, or why it isn't good.

I beat the game and I personally thought that it was overrated, though I understand why it was so hot 10 years ago. But for modern tastes, it just doesn't match up to more recent RPGs

I played it when it came out and loved it, though I didn't understand much of it since I was a kid but I borrowed it from a friend 4 years ago and got right back into it and I downloaded it recently to play it again and I don't regret it. It's my second favorite Final Fantasy, following Final Fantasy IX but I've only played I, II, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII so I don't know if that means much. I'm on a quest to beat most of the main Final Fantasies so when that's done maybe my opinion will change.

I would say to get it. Yeah sure, it doesn't really stack up to most of the recent games you can get now for the PS3, money-wise. But neither do most of the other PSN games. Personally, if you look at it from a money approach, then no game in the PSN is worth buying if you can save the money for a far better, current PS3 game. But they are meant to be simple and fun, thus cheap. I bought it, only because I loved the game when I first played it as a little kid. It was like looking at old pictures.

Overhyped. It is sad but true. At the time, it was noteworthy and entertaining. Play it, I'd never tell someone not to because the story is interesting & the gameplay is fun, but go in knowing that it is overhyped. I played it when it first came out, I enjoyed it a lot and played through it 3 times. But, honestly... if you've played any number of RPG's released after FFVII then you have seen all FFVII has to offer... with lego-man graphics.

Do you like JRPG's? Do you like fantastic, deep and emotional story and characters?

You own it to yourself to play FFVII. There is a reason why many, myself included, still hold this title as the best JRPG's ever released.

It's a classic, for 10$ you can't go wrong. ;)

I was also thinking of buying it; for 10 dollars it seems that it would be a pretty good deal. Right now I want a cheap game that'll last me a while and I was thinking of picking this up.

I have a very deep affection for FF7, I sunk a lot of time into it, and it always brings a smile to my face to play it, so I am not an unbiased source. With that in mind...

You need to ask yourself what kind of a gamer are you? While the screen shots reveal its limitations (by modern stdnards) this was a landmark game at the time. Furthermore, the gameplay remains classic 2D FF, just with "better" graphics. The game can be easily powered through, if that is what you want, but it also has a lot of system depth and side quests that can easily double or maybe even triple your time investment.

On the downside, it really can't compare with most modern games as far as graphics, presentation and even storytelling. Is that going to matter to you? You have been saving up for a PS3, are you really going to want to spend tens of hours playing a blocky looking PS1 game? There are other downloadable games, that while simple, have better graphics and slicker interfaces and can show off your PS3 better. There is no shame in this, hell I skipped out on God of War 2 when it came out because I was all engrosed in HD gaming with my X360 (I own both). Only later did I go back and pick the game up and enjoy it.

If you aren't going to be al engrossed in these new, snazzy HD games for the PS3 that you are going to pick up, then sure, give FF7 a try. As I said before, it vremains one of my personal favs. You may enjoy it a little more, however, if you wait for your new game euphoria to relax a little bit.

Just my ten cents.

What? This game lasts far longer than almost any PS3 game, and only costs 1/6 of the price. Being new does not make a game "far better."

The same goes for me. I got through most of it but decided not to finish it because it was a waste of time. Its overrated and is not fun like other old games. I like playing PS1, N64, and SNES games to but FFVII just isn't that good. Good for the time but does not hold up as even a good classic game today.

For the time the story was great but now if you've ever played a JRPG in between 10 years and now you won't find the story or characters interesting at all.

Final Fantasy 7 is OK, but I think Wild Arms is a much more fun RPG with its tool-based puzzle-solving system. Its graphics are 2D tile-based, except for battle scenes, which are in 3D (and looks a little dated, but I actually kind of like it). If you like old-style RPGs, give Wild Arms a chance.

I don't see how FFVII is overrated, when nearly every RPG gamer I've met says that it is overrated.

Personally, I love it. It's my favourite game of all time, mainly because of the quality. The story has great detail, and the graphics are very good (excluding the blocky characters). The battle system, gameplay, and hours are also awesome. I really like the materia system. And of course, the soundtrack is fantastic!

Now, it's on PSN for $9.99 USD. That's extremely cheap, especially since idiots on eBay try to sell physical copies for really expensive now. It's a must-have!!

FFVII is a great game and still worth playing even today. I like FFVIII somewhat more and FFIX is good as well but the story in FFVII is top-notch. I remember playing this game when I was 9 years old or something and the amount of content is huge. Just because the graphics aren't amazing for our time doesn't mean it will be unbearable. All you need to do is use your imagination a bit just like if you were reading a book.

Well for me, it's the best RPG I've ever played. (Somewhere in my top 5 games of all time)

It's somewhat dated in terms of graphics and the battle system nowadays, but if you can overlook that stuff you'll probably love it. The characters, world and musicare stillawesome.
Really, this game is stilleasilyworth 5x the price it is on the PSstore. (and as a bonus,if you have a PSP, you can play it on that!)

I got it way back in '97 though, so it probably wont have as big an impact on you now. But I personally think it's a game every RPG fan has to play.

FF7 was a great game when it came out but there's one fantastic reason not to play it at this point - the graphics. The character models look absolutely awful. They looked pretty incredible at the time but by the point that even FFXI came out they were looking dated. By this point it's almost jagged enough to cut your eyes on. That and the unskippable animations for things like summons (that go on for way, WAY too long) and the storyline which is nonsense until you spend quite some time thinking it over. It was my favorite RPG next to FFVI at the time but now it doesn't shine anywhere near as brightly as it once did. Which is why we need a remake.

Stop complaining about graphics, it is obvious that this game doesn't have as good of graphics as PS2 or 3. People's reasoning for not playing this game is pretty stupid. If he liked FF1 and 2, there is no question he will like 7. The first 3 FF's were kind of just Dragon Quest knock offs. FF4-7 was where the series really set itself apart and became it's own thing. These 4 games are the best. FF8 and 9 aren't bad, but 8's system of doing things could be rather annoying for some and 9 went back to FF's roots with certain characters having certain abilities with the story being sort of a rehash. Yes for 10 dollars he should get it. He should invest in getting the other FF's on PS1 as well if he hasn't played them. He already had demon souls so he does not need to buy origins. FF chronicles has FF4 and Chrono Trigger. FF anthology has FF5 and 6. Go out and start collecting my dear boy.

Sure thing. And perhaps you can give me YOUR translation of it too. Believe me, all the theories going around with VII add to my annoyances: [spoiler] Let's see...It all begins when Cloud comes in believing he is an ex-soldier member, and Sephiroth was WAS a good guy. When we flash black, we see him, Sephiroth and Zack going about their days until Sephiroth flips his lid and burns Tifa's town down. After that day, Sephiroth has been sprouting nonsense about how his mother is somehow motivating him to destroy the world and collects the materia needed to do so. During that time, Cloud decides it's best to go through an identity crisis because he found out that his memories of an elite soldier was (somehow) fake? I don't care what the FFVII logic was, how did Cloud score fake memories so vivid again? Why did Cloud decide to spazz out because he didn't know who he was? (Noted, it was after Aeries' death) Speaking of which, why didn't he attack Sephiroth on the spot when he stabbed Aeries? Instead, he decided to cry about it and give Sephiroth a mini-monologue speech about feelings. What? Not even Tidus would have done that if that was Yuna sitting there stabbed. And I can't forget the whole connection between Vincent/Sephiroth/Hojo. In order to fully grasp the plot, fans had apparently made their own translations up for a 120+ hour game. That just simply shouldn't be, especially for a game that is supposed to have the best story of the entire RPG universe. I don't know if you went back to the shinra library in the third disc but it pretty much explains everything. There's a flashback scene that shows zack and cloud in a test tube inside the Shinra library. Cloud has been doused with Mako and Jenova cells already but Zack I guess hasn't yet so he escapes with Cloud. Zack gives Cloud a Soldier suit and they start to head to Midgar. From there Cloud is still drousy and Zack is talking to him in the back of a pick up truck about wanting to become a mercenary. When they almost reached Midgar, Shinra soldiers catch up to them and shoot Zack down and kill him leave cloud to die. Cloud goes over to Zack and picks up his buster sword and heads to Midgar.

Now the question of why can't Cloud clearly remember what happened? Well if you go into the Shinra library during the third disc they said that a person needs to be doused with three showers of mako so that they can retrieve there memories and handle the Jenova cells inside of them. At the start of the game Cloud has only been doused with Mako once. Being doused with Mako only once as I said before causes some memory loss and leaves the soldier susceptible to manipulation of Jenova. When Cloud falls into the lifestream at the Northern Crater he gets his second shower of Mako. When he falls into the lifestream again after he leaves the hospital he's gotten his third shower. Which is why he gets all of his memories back and is no longer under the influence of Jenovah. Since Cloud was drousy at the time of the escape from the test tubes and all he heard was Zack talking about being a mercenary and the fact that he always wanted to be in Soldier and saw himself in the suit. He assumed that he was already a member and that he was the one wanted to be a mercenary. This was all because he wasn't finished with the Jenova project testing that was done on him and his memory became compromised.

As far as why didn't Cloud attack Sephiroth right away? I guess because he wanted to tend Aeris first, but cloud winded up fighting Jenovah during that scene anyway. Not to mention that Cloud was still under the influence of Jenovah and she manipulated him into doing whatever she wanted because cloud hadn't received his second and third shower of Mako.

^ You had to find crucial information like that? =x Well, in any case, that part of my complaints have been answered. So I'll withdraw on the complaints regarding his memories regardless. (But don't fret, I have more complaints) *Evil laughter and escapes ensues*
