Now that I have another job and can actually afford a PS3, should I even bother getting one?
I mean, it's been out for two years now.
Should I spend $400 on a system that will be outdated in another two years?
Is it worth it?

TROLL!:o nah, im just kidding.
the PS3 is more advanced than the 360. it wont be outdated for at least a decade. i would say around 8 years just like the guy below you said.supersnake930Probably not for 8 years...once MS pushes out its new box in 2012 or something, Sony has to follow suit. Anything MS does with the technology that will be available then will pretty much kill anything this gen, so Sony needs to come up with something around the same time.

The ps3 is worth it because Sony is backing the ps3 for 10 years. Unlike it competitors. So the ps4 wont be out until then.

Eh. That's kinda a PR thing. Sure, they will put new games out for it, but the focus will be on the PS4 when MS rolls out its new console in 2012 or so.hm, well, i don't mean "outdated" as in they won't make games anymore but more like they already have a new system out.
I haven't really done that much research but it seems like sony comes out with a new system every 5 years.
Are they planning on doing the same or extending that?
I definitely know that I want a playstation.
I've been pretty loyal to them with the ps and ps2.
Never had any problems and loved the games.
The xbox controller is too bulky imo and makes playing harder for me.
The main reason I want a new system is because of SH5, RE5, MGS4 and GH4.
My ps2 just isn't cutting it anymore.
:/

they will release a ps4 around the time MS will release the new xbox. sony will keep producing games for ps3 for a couple years after the ps4, but they have to push a new console out to keep up competition

Please don't buy this console. You're right. It would be a massive waste of the money. Wait two years and buy either the PS34 or the XBOX 420. There is that want you wanted to hear?

Now if they could only build in a pizza maker..
-sighs contently-
Most developers say they have to make most games multiplat in order to make money so I don't think the 5 year cycle will cut it. I am betting on Sony releasing the PS4 in 2014 or 15. I could be overestimating about a year but still. If you want a PS3 get one. gamenerd15Well, don't count on MS to wait that long. Sony will be forced to release the PS4 soon after MS releases its new console.
There's the MGS series, Gran Turismo series, Killzone series & LittleBigPlanet. If you don't own an X360 or nice gaming PC, there's also GTAIV, RE5, BF Bad Company, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, and tons more (just take a peek) to look forward too (assuming you're not broke by now). Even Uncharted, PixelJunk Monsters, and the PSN Store are strong. Not to mention if you grab a BC PS3 model, you can sell your PS2, recoup $100, and still enjoy your PS game collection.
Oh, I almost forgot: It's also one of the finest Blu-ray, DVD and media players on the market.
So basically, you should bother.
I'm just going to refer to this post whenever someone asks this question again.:)
you might aswell buy it. Not only can you play great games on the PS3 but also watch high def blu-ray movies.

hah yeah, i'd be VERY broke.
I'm still saving for just the system.
But yeah, it would be a good investment just for the blu ray.
Hm.
I'm still confused about all the high def stuff though.
Can you buy any playstation and have it work on a normal [non-hd] tv?
What will work if I don't buy an HD tv?
Do I really need one or will it work fine without it?

As I say to anyone who has the option to purchase multiple systems. DO IT. Simply put, don't cut yourself off at the knees as a gamer. The fanboys may whine and fight, but those who enjoy the best of both worlds get the last laugh and the richest experience all around. Imo that is. *hides*Czenkus
*raises hand* I wanted to give you a high five but you disappeared...
