Okay currently I'm using a hdmi cable, so if I were to use an optical cable for the audio would that make a huge difference in sound? Also I don't have a surround sound system, so basically the cable will be going from my ps3 straight to my 32" sharp aquos 1080p tv. Oh yeah one more thing I don't mind spending the money for better sound, but if it doesn't make a huge difference I probably won't get it than.

sorry i didnt mean to vote in the poll(didnt read)

but if it goes through the TV it wont make a difference. Now if you had surround sound and a reciever with optical out or hdmi it would make a difference. My reciever only had optical out as an option, so i chose that. If you want good sound and a great gaming experience you have to get surround sound to get any kind of noticable difference.

If the Optical Cable is going into the tv, don't even bother! If it's going into a surround sound system setup, then by all means get on, plug it in & enjoy!

actually if you have a good reciever then the hdmi cable is better than the optical cable. With the hdmi cable you can have high def audio such as dolby true hd and dts-ma where the optical doesnt have the bitrate to passthrough high def audio. But in your case plugging the cable directly to the tv doesnt make a difference, but if your thinking about the difference between stereo sound and true high def 7.1 audio (which the ps3 can do but not the 360 haha lemmings) think of the difference between a ps2 game on a standard def tv and a ps3 game on a high def tv. Yes the difference is that big!

He's totally right. I'm lucky enough to have a high quality receiver with HDMI 1.3 capabilites which can take advantage of PS3's highest audio output. My 7.1 setup really shows a difference between HDMI 1.3 and optical, considering optical can't do true 7.1. If you don't mind spending the money on audio, I'd suggest getting a receiver instead of using your tv speakers...

So do you use component cables for your tv then or do you have some sort of switch that enables you to use hdmi for your reciever and T.V?

i have the same type of setup. i use hdmi from the playstation to the receiver. and then i use hdmi from the receiver to the tv. i just turn off the speakers on the tv.
