I'm typically a PS gamer, but I would suggest you buy a PC given the money you have. PS exclusives aren't THAT many and THAT impressive (with exceptions definitely) and PC is a gaming powerhouse compared to consoles. Also, if you build a PC to run current games better than consoles, it will run future games better than consoles until the next console generation; so don't worry about "how long" your PC would remain relevant when comparing to consoles (comparing to "future PCs" is a different matter).
But, here's what I would suggest exactly to get the best of worlds (since I like to get myself some couch gaming instead of sitting on a PC desk all day long):
** With the extra-money remaining from the $2500 after buying a PC, refurbish your TV area so that you can fit the PC under some desk or something and connect it to your TV for couch games (such as racing games for instance, or the infamous Rocket League).
** Buy yourself one or two PS4 controllers and a compatible bluetooth dongle and google the tutorials on how to run PS4 controllers on PC (I tried it before, it was a 15 minutes setup; I used a wired setup though since I was doing it just out of curiosity).
** If your video card supports mirroring two outputs, connect a monitor to wherever you want to have your "PC desk" with a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse (you'll use that desk for "serious" gaming, such as DotA or whatever you enjoy playing, on a low-latency monitor - as compared to TVs). If your video card doesn't support two outputs, get one of those VGA mirroring adapters. You can also get pretty creative with your monitor setup if you want (multiple monitors and what not).
** EXTRA STEP: download and spend a few hours configuring Kodi. Kodi is a media center similar to Plex, but on Kodi you have more control and can download an add-on to include a gaming folder where you can have all your games in one place with their full correct games, background and thumbnails (imagine, your own local "Netflix for Gaming"). That add-on and the inclusion of a PS4 controller also work great with retro games/emulators (although I'm not sure of the legality of the issue, it depends on game-per-game and console-per-console basis). This extra step makes your setup more convenient and turn your PC into not only a gaming-center but to a media center for whichever Movies or Series you may own (Kodi even has add-ons for youtube and Netflix). I'm not sure if you can control the Kodi interface with the PS4 controller itself (I usually use my wireless keyboard).
With what I suggested, you should get yourself a powerful gaming PC which works as a gaming PC, kind-of-console and a media center.
Let me know what you think,
