You have that backwards. Sony has tons of 3rd party japanese games out or in development, whereas the 360 doesn't hardly have any. There are like 3, maybe 4 japanese rpgs out there or coming out soon, but that's going to be just about it. No Final Fantasy either.

Not going to waste my time. You're wrong. They hate the 360 in Japan, just look at the sales numbers. The vast majority of Japanese devs are either working for Sony or Nintendo.

Information Compiled by: abdelmessih101

Disclaimer:

I've had this post saved on a Word document for a while now since many people have been thinking about getting a PS3 recently :)

Yeah, I know it's a long post, but there have been so many threads about people thinking about getting a PS3 for a while now. Most of the time, it turns out to be a simple question (probably much like yours, TC) about the different versions, or online play, or exclusives, or something else that the TC could answer for him/her-self easily if he/she did a little research. One day, it got so bad that I did all the research for them, compiled all the information, saved it on a word document, and tried to get it stickied. However, the mod didn't "see a need for it," so I just copy and paste it whenever there is a new question thread (several times a day) and force feed the information to these lazy people (including you TC). It usually answers everyone's questions. If you have a question that needs an answer from someone who physically has the system, then OK, but otherwise, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH OR I WILL FORCE FEED IT TO YOU.

Here is a link to the GameSpot PS3 Console Resource Center. Most of this information can also be found there. If you don't want to read that, then read this:

Should I get a PS3? Is it worth the money?

The answer is yes; definitely get a PS3

Of course it's worth the money and here's why:

Amazing PS3 Exclusives (currently out, and those to come):

  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Warhawk
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (my personal favorite - I highly recommend this game)
  • Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
  • Killzone 2
  • Haze
  • Home (not really a game; explained further in "Online" section)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • God of War 3
  • Kingdom Hearts III (or whatever they call the sequel)
  • Resistance 2 (or whatever they call the sequel)
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Versus
  • Lair, Eye of Judgement, and Folklore are all popular despite low reviews - check them out
  • Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (rumored, but very likely)
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Tekken 6- The King of Iron Fist Tournament
  • Little Big Planet
  • Socom Confrontation
  • Unreal Tournament III- PS3 timed exclusive!
  • White Knight Chronicles- formerly known as White Knight Story; it's an action RPG by industry pros

You can't argue with that list; trust me, it's well worth the money

For a full list that I won't put here for the sake of space, go to this site

Plus, don't forget:

Online service is free,

It's the cheapest form of Blu-Ray player on the market. In fact, other Blu-Ray players on the market START at around $800, so if you got a PS3 exclusively as a Blu-Ray player, you'd still be getting 50%+ off compared to the competition.

Most have backwards compatibility (hurry, the 60GB models w/ the best B/C are going fast)

What are the differences between the 4 SKUs (versions)?

You can check backwards compatibility for specific games here

60GB - limited availability, price somewhere near $400-$500 (depends where you get it from and what comes with it like bundles or value packs), uses the EE chip - 99% backwards compatibility, built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, SD, CF, and other flash card and memory slots/readers

80GB - $500 bundled w/ Motorstorm, uses software emulation (no EE chip)- 85% backwards compatibility (I've heard), built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, has flash card and memory slots/readers (like 60GB)

40GB - $400, bundled w/ Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray, no PS2 backwards compatibility, PS1 backwards compatibiiliy, built in Wi-Fi, 2 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers

20GB - (I'm not sure if you can find this anymore),uses EE chip -99% backwards compatibility (like 60GB), 4 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers, no Wi-Fi (you need an Ethernet cable to play online)

If you've got a PS2 and it still works, there's not much reason to go with the 80GB instead of the 40GB except for Motorstorm (if you like it), and a couple of extra USB slots. The memory is upgradable anyway.

If you don't have a PS2 or if it's broken, and you still want to play PS2/PS1 games, get the 60GB if you can, or the 80GB if you can't find the 60GB.

If the memory slots are important to you, then your options are the 60GB or 80GB versions.

*Note: I went with the 60GB version before the price drop, and I don't regret the $600+ I spent at all.

***NOTE*** All PS3 versions have PS1 backwards compatibility. The 40GB version is the only one without some form of PS2 backwards compatibility

What about the Online Service?

Online service on the PS3 (called the Playstation Network) is completely free.

The PS3 has the Playstation Store, where you can download free demos, videos, images, themes, and buyPS1 games, other arcade-like games, add-ons to PS3 games, and entire PS3 games (the only two available right now are Warhawk and Tekken 5).

I know that you can get TV shows and movies from Xbox Live, and the Playstation Network will be doing something like soon. The PS3 is also compatible with DivX movies from your PC and you can get movies on your PS3 that way.

Sony is due to release Home in Q1 2008; it's a virtual world where you can create and customize an avatar and a home for your avatar (ala The Sims). Also, you can access stuff from the Playstation Store in virtual shops, hang out at public spaces with other online PS3 users, and play virtual arcade games. You can text chat using your PS3 remote or keyboard or voice chat using a Bluetooth headset. You can invite your new-made friends back to your private home and share music and videos saved on your PS3, and even invite them to play multiplayer games together. There will also to be a trophy system comparable to the Xbox Live achievement point system, and you can display your trophies at you private place. In short, Home is AWESOME!

Here is a Gametrailers.com 25 minute Home walkthrough

Also, Sony is expected to make the Cross Media Bar (XMB) available to you while playing games online. It will hopefully be in one of the next few updates. Until then, however, the online format depends on the game (Resistance has a perfect format IMO).

On the XMB, once you log in to Playstation online account, you can see your buddy list, whether or not your buddies are online and what they're playing if they are online. You can send them a message or invite them to a chat room where you can use voice chat. You can also access saved music and videos from your XMB and hopefully this will soon be available in-game.

Most online games have voice chat and the quality depends on the headset. I have the headset that came bundled with Warhawk when I bought it from the store (for a total of $60, it saves $20 over getting them individually). It's works great.

I've had my PS3 since January 2007, and have experienced minimal (little to no) lag online or other problems in general. I've heard from others on this site with both the PS3 and 360 who have said that the gamers on Xbox Live are less mature and there is a lot more racism and cursing on Xbox Live than on the Playstation Network.

Even though I've never played on Xbox Live, I've heard from people who have used both that Xbox Live isn't that much better than the Playstation Network.

I really wouldnt consider Bioshock a RPG...if anything its a FPS with an open world. You dopnt really have an XP bar or anything, as for the whole "I have a life and dont know what j stands for" That just makes you sound like a douche that doesnt know what a J is.

You must be a serious fanboy to type up a couple of pages just to justify your waste of 600 dollars.

Did you even read the disclaimer, he typed this up a while back and just copies and pastes for other people. Anyway, I dare you to find a single store that charges $600 for a PS3.

Yo Borat, He said he wrote it a while ago and had it saved to a word document. That doesnt make him a fanboy. Because if that made him a fanboy, then it would make everyone on this website that writes a review a fanboy.

You have that backwards. Sony has tons of 3rd party japanese games out or in development, whereas the 360 doesn't hardly have any. There are like 3, maybe 4 japanese rpgs out there or coming out soon, but that's going to be just about it. No Final Fantasy either.

that is actually incorrect. the PS3 currently has Folklore as its only JRPG, and White Knight Chronicles is in development along with FF13 and FF13 Versus and Last Remnant. the 360 has Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Phantasy Star Online, FFXI Online, and Enchanted Arms already out on it, with Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, the PS expansion pack, and Cry On in development. if the JRPG is your favorite genre, i would reccomend the 360. the poster is also correct in mentioning that the PS3 does have some great FPS coming up. with Warhawk, Resistance, and Uncharted out and exclusive to the PS3 (as well as Ratchet and Clank if you like your killing sprees to be a little more...cute,) and UT 3 just out, andHaze coming up soon, the PS3 is quickly developing a library of quality shooters.

so...btw if you post this in the PS3 forum, you're far more likely to get "buy a PS3" as the response. i posted a poll in the PS3 forums a week ago about getting a PS3 or keeping my 360, and only one person voted that they liked the 360 better. well, i guess i'll be the odd one out here and say that i think you should get the 360. while the PS3 is a very sleek looking console that can create some great looking games, the 360 just has more quality games on it.

Since when are Warhawk, Uncharted, and Ratchet and Clank considered FPS? You need to check your sources. Also, you're only going off of the more popular JRPG's as your source for PS3. You've forgotten the Eternal Sonata AND Enchanted Arms and Last Remnant are all being ported, as well. PLUS Final Fantasy XI was on PS2 YEARS ago. Here's some more RPG's that have been announced.

I respect your opinion, but Uncharted is more of an Action/Adventure game than just a shooter, and Ratchet and Clank is more of a Platformer than a shooter; I have both, and neither of them are really like the stereotypical shooter. Also, game quality is subjective, not objective. While it is a fact that the 360 has more games currently out,I personally enjoy more games from the PS3's game library than from the 360's game library, and that's why I chose the PS3.

[QUOTE="llorta"]whats a jrpg? I have a life and dont know what the j stands for. I assume it is a typo: blue dragon, oblivion, bioshock. dstryr13

JRPG=Japan Role Playing Game, JA

bioshock is a FPS, oblivion is better on PS3 i hear, and blue dragon is probably one of the worst games ever

Woah, slow it down dude. You have to explain to him what JA means also.

The guy is obviously a troll. Let's stop humoring him...

You're gonna regret not getting a PS3 when you get the red ring of death 2 months after you buy a 360. Almost every one of my friends who bought a 360 had to send it in to get it fixed. One of my friends bought another 360 after his first one died and they both broke for no apparent reason. I bought my PS3 on launch day and have never had a problem with it. No overheating, nothing. Most people bought a 360 for Halo 3 but at this moment it seems that Call of duty 4 is owning it.

i know that Warhawk, Uncharted, and R&C take place from a third person perspective, but i lumped them in with the FPS because they (especially Warhawk) play similarly. i've done a lot of research on the PS3's library of games because i was seriously considering buying one this year, but imo it wasn't worth it when i already had the 360 and wii.

as for the library of role playing games, i only mentioned japanese RPGs because the poster mentioned JRPGs in his post. i forgot about Star Ocean 4 on PS3, as well as a few other obscure games...like Bumpy Trot 2 (or Steambot Chronicles 2 as it would probably be called if released in the US.) anyway, it's just openions, but i'd have to say that the 360 has a larger library of RPGs, shooters, racing games, and horror games right now, so if that's your bag, get the 360. the PS3 has more qualityaction games right now, though.

Obvious troll now. Makes since why he was rejecting reality earlier. No one is that ignorant.

That fact that he won't even trust you, a 360 owner about the amount of rpg's coming out for each is proof he is a fanboy coming in here just to start trouble. Mods, lock this thread?

Most have backwards compatibility (hurry, the 60GB models w/ the best B/C are going fast)

abdelmessih101

Dude, Haze isn't a PS3 exclusive...it's like saying GeoW is Xbox 360 exclusive. Both are on PC, so it's not an exclusive. Also, Kingdom Hearts III hasn't been announced for ANY system. It's like saying Star Ocean will be PS3 exclusive. It hasn't been decided. Don't to exclusives that haven't been announced.

Should I get a ps3 or xbox360 for christmas. I am considering a ps3 because of the price, but I also like the rpg/japanese games of the xbox. The ps3 i heard has mostly fps, am i right. Yes?llorta

Well, I was in that same position last Friday. I was finally convinced that I should get a console and was looking for the best one for me. I am now 100% going to get a PS3. Why?

Nintendo Wii:

- Much more child/female appeal

- The controller is only fun when in the mood for it

- More group oriented

- Can become old

- Last-generation graphics

- Lack of "cool" games

- Sub-par online mode

Microsoft Xbox 360:

- 8$ a month for online access (almost everyone ends up with it too)

- Mainly FPS games

- Red ring of death (HUGE PROBLEM, google it)

- Very loud

- May end up being replaced rather soon and dumped thereafter like Xbox was

- Can't play movies unless upgraded

- Will scratch CD's if moved while CD's are inside

- Overheats

- Microsoft

Sony Playstation 3:

- Most expensive of all 3 (if you don't get xbox live)

- Lack of above average 2007 library

- Worst sales in 2007 of all 3

I can't think of anymore. If someone reminds me of more bad things I'll add to the list. So far it seems pretty obvious as to which you should choose.

GO buy one troll..unless you want your console breaking every week and sending it in for repairs..Personally I see no reason in buying a 360 until those failures are fixed..

Its just like buying a car. If someone told that a car is the best in terms of speed and such but has a 33% failure rate and you have a pay an additional $60 every month just to keep it in shape, would you buy it over a car that offer speed and such with reliability and offordable price and no "$60" payments?

I would certainly go with the latter.

ok, let me get this straightened out for you.

the 360 currently has 2jrpg (which r even worth mentioning) blue dragon and eternal sonata (or whatever its called)

eternal sonata is also comming to the ps3 soon with more charcters and other additions. haven't played either of them and have no interest in doing so, but from what i hear blue dragon is the weaker of the 2.

the ps3 does have a lot of FPS games, well the ones that matter anyway. but the 360 has waaay more.

the ps3 has a rich selection of action games such asHS, R&C, uncharted, etc.

also has on JRPG/adventure type game folklore

Let's just say there is plenty to buy if you're not a shooter fan on the PS3. (not to say the 360 doesn't have any good titiles, such as mass effect)

in the future, however, the PS3 will have a wide variety of jrpgs, hence being a japaneese product itself, but if you don't believe me here are some of the top of my head FF13, FF13v, KH, Disgaea3, white knight story.

if the JRPGs are the games of the highest value to you, thentoday the 360 is more appealing. but if you want some higher quality titles the PS3shoulf have a good library in '08.

in the end, as we all know, it'syour choice.

i only have ps3and i am more bias toward it, but i don't and won't discredit thelibrary of games for 360. (however the console itself is MS crap that should have never been released unit it was fully functional, so if you comparethe actual consoles PS3 way > than 360)
