I am mostly looking for a blu ray player to watch movies on.

If I got a PS3 I would take some advantage of the gaming abilities.

One question I have though is if the quality of the blu ray player on the PS3 is the same as a stand alone Blu ray player?

What do you think I should get.

The PS3 is the cheapest and best Blu-ray player out there today. Not to mention the DVD, SACDand CD playback, plus PlayStation series gameplay and music playback, a hard drive and it looks great in your living room. Give me a reason why you shouldn't buy one.

Get a PS3. Not only a Blu-Ray player but also a game system. You can't say that about your normal Blu-Ray players and also, the PS3 is one (if not) the cheapest player.

The updates that you get with the ps3, someone had said in another forum that they can put out new ones for the bluray player in the future. Not sure if that's true, but if it is, then that's also a plus

While PS3 is a BD player, and it's a good one, I think the newest BD players (especially ones with ethernet) are better than the PS3. But they do not play games.

Oh not at all dude. I can understand how you might think that it wouldn't be the on par with a Blu-Ray player since it does more things, but rest assured it is just as good if not better than any other Blu-Ray player out there, and you get the media capabilities (you can store Photos, Music, and Video on it) and gaming capabilities.

With PS3 you get a top notch blu-ray player which is constantly being updatedthrough firmware updates via the internet. You also get a incredible gaming machine, internet browser on your TV, a media server where you can stream audio and video from your pc, also you get a harddrive to store music, videos, pictures. It really is a no brainer, get the PS3, get Uncharted Drakes Fortune, and Warhawk and you'll be set. I've bought 7 blu-ray discs so far, and mostly rent blu-ray discs from Blockbuster video. The picture and audio quality are pristine and the ps3 will also upscale your dvds.

I really think that the answer should be fairly simple. Get it, is the cheapest and it plays games. And the quality is great too.

The answer to this question depends entirely on what you expect out of a BR player. If you want top notch video and audio then get one of the better stand alone version with all the features. For example the PS3 doesn't outsource 7.1 audio to a highend reciever, it does the decoding internally. But it is a great mid range player because of it's multi-media capabilities, it is also one of the fastest BR player on the market. As an added bonus you also get a web browser and a game console.
