Everyone, including gamespot, give MGS4 a really good write up and rating, and I was considering getting it, but I am not sure. On gamespot I have seen lots of gameplay movies, but I still can't understand what all the fuss is about. The graphics look fair and the stealth genre seems weird with barrels appearing out of thin air, then hiding in them. Anyone help me out please?

Only get MGS4 if and ONLY IF you have played the three other MGS games.

If you're a fan of the MGS saga, you should, or if you like Stealth Action games. Honestly, it was a solid 9.0 for me. No favouring or anything, but the story was actually well-told. It clears up the rest of the saga and it had great visuals, I suppose the cinematics could be made into a CG film like Resident Evil: Degeneration and the voice acting was great. Downside IMO is playing it in the long, long run if you play the same difficulty. But the hardest game mode, 'The Boss Extreme' is actually worth trying out, and should keep you playing with the challenge. A lot of its features are great too.

^This pretty much. Play the first three, reading about the history doesn't do the games justice, then play the forth. And play them in order : MGS 3 : Snake Eater, MGS, MGS 2 : Sons Of Liberty, MGS 4 : Guns Of The Patriots.

Yeah but he needs to play the others first to really enjoy it,and I don't mean to just run through it.You need to treat these games like a book and pay attention.

get the game. the story mode is intense, you'll get sucked in quick, especially after plaiyng the other 3. The online mode is pretty sick. So yeah, get the game, you won't be disappointed. you are in a win/win situation

Playing MGS4 without any prior experience with the other games is like walking into a comedian's act half-way through. I mean, you might get some of the jokes and references he made before based on the context, but it won't be as funny. However, if you've been watching the comedian the entire way through, it's probably some of the funniest stuff you've ever heard.

Well put :)

Anyway you could always download the MGS4 database from the Store but is quite hard to navigate.

If you are new to Metal Gear, like I was, it may take you about 2 or 3 hours to get into Metal Gear.

The first thing to realize is that the game is fiction, and that the people who made the game realize this. It is slightly fantastic, and the game is not presented as ultra-serious...I mean, it's a GREAT story, but there are moments of humor.

So be sophisticated. It's not a game for morons.

The second thing is the controls. Again, this is where the 2 hours or so may be required to really get to where the controls are second nature.

Finally,I would suggest youtake your time if you buy MGS4.Each moment of the game is loaded with details. It is a terrible idea to gun through a mission or skipcutscenes...

It would be like renting a great movie and only watching the credits.

Agreed

I never played any of the MGS games and yet I loved MGS4. I had a hard time understanding the story but i was able to understand what's happening as the game was going. To OP, buy it. The gameplay is awesome, story is perfect, and it makes you fall in love with the characters.

I disagree ( now i have all the other MGS games) but i think that he would enjoy the game regardless although having played them all before helps the stroy drag you in. Anways to answer his question its just a great game....you cant go wrong with a game that received 9's and 10's across the board...

Man... kojima and his team deserves everything for creating Metal gear saga every gamer should experience this saga no matter what. its a saga thats made with a lot of love ( very few games ). I suggest you buy it brand new and buy the essentials colection too common it will only cost you 70 bucks !! and its almost the entire series. go for it man you wont regret it.

You can play MGS4 even if you didn't play the first 3. With any sequel it just adds more info to the story and characters. In this case, a lot of story and characters. You have got to play this game.
