I have owned a PS3 for a while, but have yet to play MGS4. The reason for this is that I wanted to play the previous 3 before playing 4.

However, I have watched complete walkthroughs of 1 and 2 online, and have read the plot sequence for 3 a few times as well.

So, I ask...should I go ahead and get 4? Or do I need to go out, buy a PS2, and play the previous 3?

The story is very confusing, if you want to get into the MGS series and understand exactly whats going on, then I would say go back and play the other ones first but if you just want to have fun with it I would get it. Its an amazing game and you dont NEED to have played the other ones to have fun with it but it helps.

Its by FAR the best game I've played this gen.

It would probably be for the best to go through, well, the entire Metal Gear saga before playing MGS4 in order to grasp the plot in its entirety. But it would take much more then a single playthrough of all of them just to totally get them. So I say don't worry about it. MGS4 is fantastic in other areas besides storytelling.

You don't have to have played the previous iteration of the series to enjoy the game, I sure didn't.

You need to get the MGS:Essential Collection. You must experience the awesome power of Snake Eater first hand!

And until you know the Snake Eatersong you shall never be allowed to play MGS 4!

Either way you should get MGS4, the game is awesome. One of the best this gen also I believe it's becoming a greatest hits title so you should be able to find it for less.

If you can get yours hands on the previous three, I would say go for it and play them so you can learn the sophisticated story behind the series. And i would say yes definately buy mgs4 its one hell of an experience/game. MGS4 will tell you the story but it will be confusing. You can always google the game or wikipedia it.

You won't appreciate it as much if you haven't played every single main game of these series, but stand-alone-wise, it's still flippin' fantastic.

THIS^ If you like to play a very good stealth/action shooter with superior story & creative enemy designs...you just cant go wrong with MGS4.

The game isn't that fun and the only reason to play is for the story, so I suggest you play the others first.

I watched all the Retrospectives on IGN and read everything on the MGS Database and I didn't really like MGS4 too much. To me, it was merely alright.

You wouldn't really NEED to play three, but if you didn't play Snake Eater you would be missing out on a great game. The gameplay is similar to that of one and two. If you want to watch a walkthrough for any metal gear solid I reccommend vash12349. He's one of the funniest men giving walkthroughs on youtube in my opinion.

Yes get that. And if you have a PSP, get Portable Ops....I think it's 6 years after Snake Eater. Then play MGS4 lol.
