You should get the MGS essential colection, hence it brings MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3.
I highly recommend you to play through these games, cause that way you will fully enjoy what MGS4 has to offer.

I would get the Collection but I live in Europe and it has not been released here and I cant get it from Ebay either

Pre order MGS 4, I live in Europe and in my country(Netherlands) you get MGS vol.2, a ''summary movie''. That's a cheap solution;)
But if you really want to buy one of those game, I should buy MGS2, cuz MGS4 is a sequel to MGS2, and MGS3 actually isn't..
MGS2
MGS3 is actually a prequel to the entire Metal Gear series while MGS2 contains the most recent events prior to MGS4. I'd still try and get MGS3 though, it's my favourite of the series.
Get MGS2 because MGS4 is the sequel to it, MGS3 is the prequel to all the MGS series and it tells the story of Big Boss.
So if you want to prepare for MGS4 play MGS2 the most.
Really you need to play through all 3 if you want the full story. But personally id get metal gear solid 3 my fav game of the series.
its like Rambo metal gear solid style
But as everyone said MGS 2 will fill you in a bit better on the story to date clarifying a few details
actually skip MGS2 and just play MGS3
while MGS2 is a great game you do have to control sissy boy raiden (not the badass looking ninja raiden from MGS4(atleast we hope he will be)) for the majority of the game. Paired with his girlfriend rose over the codec you get to hear all about their relationship problems and feelings over the radio.
whereas in MGS3 you get to control snake who is just a badass jungle predator

personally i didnt think raiden was that bad of a character... sure he was sissy but try to look past that and look at the badass things he did
Play all 3. MGS, MGS2, and MGS3, in that order. Don't skip any dialogue or cutscenes and you will know the whole story up until now (also, MGS:PO, MG and MG2:SS follow the storyline as well).
Even though the graphics are dated on MGS1, you should still play it. And don't not play MGS2 just because Raiden is in it. There's a whole story plot involving him, and how he must stop "Solid Snake." Westerners may not have liked the character so much, but in Japan the majority of players loved him. I liked playing as Raiden because the story was still great.

That is not a good reason,
1. because Most of the things said in MGS2 is being explained in MGS4, you only advised him to skip MGS2 because you didn't like Raiden.
2. true you get to play as Snake in MGS3 but it is not THE Solid Snake that was Big Boss the legendary Soldier which is true he is great as Solid Snake, but you can't tell someone to skip a game because you didn't like the character of the game.
As I said MGS2 has a lot of information that left us with a lot of questions and most of them will be answered in MGS4.
Still if he gets to play all of them is better.
Is MGS availible to buy from the PS store? I'm not a fan but suddenly I'm interested
**EDIT** The first MGS I mean. The one on the PS.
MGS2 for 2 reasons.
1) Its the best one.
2) Its the one before MGS4 (MGS3 is a prequel to the whole Metal Gear series).
I highly recommend getting the MGS essentials and play all of them on EASY, just so you get the whole story and dont skip any scenes.
PS: MGS2 IS the best one, so you better not skip on that one.
