If you are a fan of MGS series then definately get MGS4 .. story, gameplay, cinematics .. everything is top-notch and arguably the best current-gen game there is ..
GTA4 is a decent game I guess, just way to repetitive for me .. gets real boring ..I stopped after 23% completion ..
I would say I don't know but putting those games together will bring you different opinion on which one you should get.
:)
GTAIV
in mgs4 you will be watching more than playing through the entire game , you'll only get five hours of gameplay max if you don't die a lot , and you need to know the entire story of the MGS series and understand it fully before playing it, GTAIV on the other hand has a whole new story with a whole new character so no worries on the story side , cutscenes last only 10 minutes max and gameplay can last you for 40+ hours if you just do one mission after the other, if you mess around or die a lot you'll get 100+ hours, so either go with MGS4 that has long cutscenes and very short (but very epic) gameplay that has a lot of awesome boss battles OR have tons of gameplay with GTAIV which has a good story, short cutscenes and tons of time when it comes to gameplay, in the end it's all about which you perfer really, oh and warning this thread will probably be filled with MGS trolls so watch out.

Yea but the game is terrible ..
I'd have to go with MGS4. I just started my fifth playthrough yesterday and it hasn't gotten boring yet. It has great cutscenes and you can play the game almost however you want to play it. Then after that you can log onto MGO which isn't the best but it's still a great addition to an already great single player package.

I agree with this CANADIAN dude, GTA IV got so repeditive for me aswell, i stopped at 33% then it currupted my PS3...thanks rockstar. The game is not all that great...
MGS4 is the best game i've ever played period, and most would agree it is the best game available to this day.
GTAIV is the most over rated game ever, i stopped playing 70% through the game. It was nice when there were no games on ps3, but just because it was one of the first decent games on next gen doesn't mean its worth a 10.0. The game doesn't take advantage of next gen hardware, it might as well have been on ps2. People just had to pay $60 for a ps2 caliber game. I wouldn't even buy GTAIV over a lot of other games like Assasin's Creed.
I would get MGS4. I have both games, and GTA4 just lacked everything that made the other GTA games so good. GTA4 got boring to me half way through the game, and I never finished it, simply because it didn't offer much to do outside of the main missions. I remember in the previous GTA games you could do everything under the sun, but in this one, not so much. It lacks the fun factor of the others.
However, MGS4 is such an intricate game storywise and gameplay wise. If you are big in stories, MGS4 answers almost all the questions you've had from the previous installments of the series, and ties it together fairly well. And on a gameplay front, it has some great boss battles, and offers many ways to get through the areas of the game. You could be stealthy or run and gun, however you please. There are so many rewards for this game that it is crazy. There are about 70 weapons to use and many unlockables for completing certain tasks throughout the game. I played and beat this game 12 times. It took me twelve playthroughs to get everything this game had to offer, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
