I just became afflicted with the infamous disc reading problem. Won't read anything. I bought a G27, was testing it out, then downloaded the Heavy Rain demo, played it, deleted it because it's more of a movie than a video game, turned off my console, brought it back downstairs, tried to fire up GTA4, nothing. Midnight Club LA, nothing. NONE of my games work. P'd, I called Sony, the automatic recording recommended I reset my system settings. I did, still doesn't read. So I get on the phone withy a person, and they say because my PS3 is "no longer under warranty" ( September 2008 ) I have to shovel out nearly $150 to get it repaired.. I doubt the piece of crap is even worth that much! I've heard so many good things about the Slim, I might just buy one of those, but I don't know how to transfer data. I'm pretty sure the disc is not spinning because I put it in and hear 1 noise, then 4 quieter noises, and nothing after that. So my question: Should I get it repaired or get another one. If I do get another one, how do I transfer my saved game data?

My opinion is: get a new slim PS3. If you spend your money to repair your current one, it will die on you again in the future.

Exactly, sure they haven't been out long enough to know there true liability..but spec wise, the reduced power consumption makes the console generate less heat which in turn gives you less chanced of getting hardware related issues.

That happened to me as well. Just get a slim, if you get it repaired it can just as easily brake again. Plus, people sometimes buy them on ebay for about $50+ so theres some more cash.

Just buy a new one. I was having the same problems as you and I sent it in to sony for repairs and they sent it back with the same problems. They also sent my system back with alot of scratches. Sony's repair service is crap.
