Isn't Peace Walker a sequal to MGS 3 because I've never played it but I am really pumped for Peace Walker.

Yes Peace Walker is a sequel to MGS3 (takes place a decade later) MGS3>Portable Ops>Peace Walker (you can skip PO though and understand Peace Walker story)

My bad lol. I didn't answer your question. I say give MGS3 a go so you'll have a more clear understanding of Peace Walker's story and the main character.

absolutely. There's alot of emotional tie-in to MGS3 that would definitely enhance your enjoyment of Peacewalker. That and the fact that MGS3 is phenomenal. Make sure you get ahold of the 'Subsistance" version for the better 3rd person camera control.

I'd recommend playing any canon Metal Gear game before playing this one, as I'm sure it explains a lot of things or fleshes them out more fully. However, as someone else noted, if you just want to know the story of Big Boss, then you only need to play MGS3 and PO before PW. However, that's only if you really want to know the full story. I thought MGS3 was absolute garbage, so I can't really recommend that you play it; I'm in the minority on this one, though.

I have never played a MGS game nor really cared to know the story behind it. I will still pick up MGS: peace walker since it just came out and is hot for the PSP. If I wanted to understand storyline and enjoy a good plot, I would rather pick up a best seller novel. At the end of the day it's only a video game. I honestly don't think you need to play MGS 3 first in order to enjoy MGS: PW more, but hey, it's your call at the end of the day.

A little update...

I just finished MGS 3 Subsistence yesterday. Wow. That was an awsome Metal Gear Solid game. I've played 1,2,and 4 but this really blew me away. I will say that it is my second favorite MGS game behind the original. The boss battles were epic. I'm debating whether to play Portable Ops or Peace Walker next,
