In the beginning, I played alot of PS2 games on my PS3 like Final Fantasy and stuff. Then, when I came to these boards, I heard someone say that playing PS2 games on the PS3 causes the laser to focus alot on it and it could damage the PS3 completely. After I heard this, I got really scared! I want to play Resident Evil 4 now but I'm scared that something might happen to my PS3.. so, is it safe to play a PS2 game on the PS3 or no?

Thanks!

If you have a PS2 and still working it's always safer to play games on it, and usually games run better on a PS2, since the PS3 uses some kind of emulation. Not sure bout the laser thing though.

Haven't played much PS2 on my PS3 but the times I have I did get a couple freezes and my color got messed up but I'm pretty sure it was the game, not the PS3. The PS3 was also all back to normal when I turned it on. I think your fine but don't hold it over me if I'm wrong.

Never heard of the laser thing. If you have the 60 GB, must mean your PS3 is running on the Emotion Engine to emulate PS2 games. It should be fine, especially when your emulation is hardware based.

60GB has the same chip (EE) the Ps2. It's not an Emulation. If you have the legit 60GB that can play Ps2 games from the EE chip then I don't see why you would have to worry. I do it all the time... Haven't heard about the Laser thing, but I wouldn't trip about it..

I've had a 60G since December of '06. I still play PS2 games on it frequently and have since I got it. I've never had an issue.

The 60 gig does not use software emulation. It has the EE chip embeded onboard.

well why would u want to put old ps2 disc in a ps3 blue ray player? i only use bd on my ps3 i am not going to put any crap discs on ps3, i have a ps2 and its ok for me if u dont have a ps2 then its different u can use and the upscaled quality of ps2 games in ps3 is also bad.

its common sense really if u really want ur bd player to last long then only put clean new discs in it. preferably bd. but it also depends on luck.

You shouldn't had any issues playing PS1 and PS2 games on your 60GB system.

I don't personally have any, as long as your CD's are clean and scratch free, which means in good condition, it won't have impact on PS3 console.

60GB PS3 uses EE chip (Emotion Engine) which is used in PS2 console, laser has nothing to do with it hardware wise. It keeps the disk working, but it focuses on Blu-ray data disks.

Keep your gaming CDs in order and you won't have any issues. ;)

Well I've had my 60GB PS3 for almost 2 years now and I play PS2 games on it a lot and there are no problems. Besides they look better upscaled and load faster too. Plus the internal memory cards make it more convenient. I have a working PS2 but there's no way I'm going back to that with all the PS3 offers for backward compatibility.
