I used to purchase all of my games at launchand hold on to the very best after I had beaten them, and then sell the mediocre games after I had beaten them.
Now withevery new purchase, I am playing through the game quickly but leaving myself enough time to enjoy it. Then I will put it on ebay and only lose 10 - 15 %. About the cost of a game rental. Sometimes I will even make money when pre-order sites offer up $20 dollars to preorder the game. Then I am paying $40 and selling for $45 +.
I also recently signed up for gamefly, so my purchasing of $60 dollar titles will decrease drastically as there is a whole backlog of titles I am anticipating playing.
What is nice about the PS3 and 360 is that basically, by playing any title you are adding the game to your "virtual" collection. While wanting a physical copy is understandable for the hardcore collector, my virtual collection is gratifying enough for me while also minimizing shelf clutter. God knows I have too much stuff anyway.
Any game title before this generation needs a physical copy if you are physically collecting, because there is no record of any of us playing any of them other than in our memories. I will relish these days and look back on them very fondly. However I embrace with open arms the future of digital distribution, and our "virtual" collection of games will only continue to grow becoming more and more impressive as you can reflect on your accomplishments in one easily readable and organized list on our consoles dashboards.
It would be very nice if when the future respective consoleis released we are able to import our trophy collectiononto our PS4's profile card and endlessly expand with each console generation after that.
