Basically, had system for 10 months, no probs what so ever. However, I have noticed that when I put the system in a vertical position, the fans (or one of them) make a slightly odd noise. it's not constant and it comes and goes, but it sounds like something is slightly loose. The noise is hard to describe, but it basically just sounds like ... well... a slightly loose fan. Like I said, it comes and goes and it does not happen in the horrozontal position. The sound is also not very loud, and with a game running or film playing, you would never hear it. I only noticed it cos I was sitting in a empty room with the TV off with the system on...

I spoke to the shop I bought it from (GAME in UK) and they said, bring it back and they will swap it for a new system. They will test it first however.

The problem is, the noise is hardly very loud and I am sure many people would not even notice. I also worry that it will be more or less impossible for them to hear the noise in a shop when loud music is played constantly and there are loads of customers talking etc.

The system works fine, but I just worry that, if something is loose, it is only going to get worse...

So what would you guys do? SHould I take it back?

Sure. The most the people at the store can say is "no." If they say no at the store then perhaps call Sony and ask them if it can lead to permanent damage.

Well you got a warranty on it or something? Cause if so just see how it does in the next few months. If everything is working fine then it probably isn't a big deal, but don't know too much about the inside of a PS3.. for all I know it could be slowly damaging something. If you do continue to play it just play in the horizontal. The only downside to replacing your system would be losing all your data unless you can transfer that someone. And in that case if you can, let them test it and see what they think.

its quite a trek to the shop, thats the only thing. I think Ill phone them tomorrow and tell them as it is... that the noise is very minimal, but if something is loose it is only going to get worse... see what they said. they are normally quite good. on the same note, if i have got PSN games I have payed for, Wipeout etc, can I redownload them for free provided I am logged in with the same PSN ID?

standard 12 months, but in the UK I can take it back to the shop and they HAVE to either replace or repair. GAME simply replace.

It would probably be best to take it back. Remember that the store wants you to be a happy customer, so if you are not satisfied, they are likely to try and help you out. Have them put their ear right up to it and emphasize that this could be the beginning of a much larger problem.

These kind of things would just bother me for the rest of the time i play PS3. Also, there is high chance it could get worse. It doesnt hurt to go and swap, so i reccomend doin tht.

mine does the same thing. when i put it in the normal position it stops. just a design flaw i guess. i doubt they will give you a new one. nonetheless if you wanna try, go for it!

I suggest you take it back immediately. There are many reports of ps3s that begin to run their fans on a "high" setting and start emitting a ridiculously high amount of air intake before they experience the infamous "YLOD" (Yellow Lights of Death) and overheat the motherboard, rendering the system unusable. This exploit is more common in the old 20g and 60g ps3 systems, but there have been reports of faulty 40g and 80g systems as well.

Well, took it back, and they accepted it. Can't praise GAME enough. Got new 80gig system and, unlike my old 40gig one, I got a dual shock controller. I also got a free copy of LBP as it was bundled. + ANOTHER YEARS WARRENTY!!! GAME have impressed me hugely at dealing with my problem so well...
