Why unplug it? If you're afraid of a power surge.. get a power surge protector. The old PS3's with the on/off switch had problems because of it. Be thankful you have the slim version with no switch = no problems. I have it and I keep it plugged at all times.

I unplug mine,,,,cause its my second ps3 and it can go days without use......The only worry about it goes the same for pc's,,,,they want you to always hve alittle juice in the system to keep wires and circuits alittle warm.....Cold starts and heating up fast which the system does causes breaking in small circuits and what not

Do you guys always leave the PS3 on standby? Why is it bad for your PS3 to plug it out whenever you're not using it? I always did this with all consoles and never had a problem :?

I seriously cannot see how hitting the back switch on the fats or unplugging the slims could possibly cause any problems... that makes no sense at all.

unless of course you do it while the system is on, then you're very stupid and it's your fault, but as long as the system is off and in stand-by mode there should be 0 risk of hurting the system by hitting the switch or unplugging....

The best practice however would be to have the ps3 plugged into a surge protector, and if you want to save energy just turn the surge protector off, they all come with on/off switches.

Treat your ps3 like a pc. How often do you guys flip the switch on the back of your pc, or even unplug it? I used to flip the switch on the back of my ps3 and unplug it all the time, that ps3 ended up getting ylod. The only time you need to flip the swtich onthe back of your ps3is if you won't be gaming for a couple days. The only time you need to unplug it is when theres a tunder storm.

I have been unplugging my ps3 slim ever since launch day when its not in use and have had no problems as of yet. Its a great way of saving power for your home. I dont understand how unplugging it will harm your console :/

it won't, like I said in a previous post, the only way of that being harmful is if you do it while the ps3 is on.

Run your PS3 for 20 minutes then put it into standby mode and listen carefully. while the console is still hot, even in standby mode, it leaves the fan running until it cools down. Unplugging the console or flipping the power switch in the back shuts that off.

Also you don't really need to unplug during a storm as long as your house is properly wired it should be fine. If you're REALLY worried then just get a surge bar(90% of those multi-plug bars are surge bars) and it will flip if anything ever happens.

are you sure about that? no seriously because I had no idea, actually I'm positive that when I shut it down I can't hear anything anymore, maybe it's because everytime I play I always leave it for about 10 minutes or so resting on the XMB (for the operational temperature to go down) then I shut it off, I dunno, but 'ill start paying attention to that from now on.

oh, sorry, I didn't meant to call you stupid, that was not directed at you, actually it's not being stupid, it's just not knowing any better, also wow 3 years? it actually endured a long time being shut down incorrectly 8).

But yeah it seems that even on stand-by is not a good idea to switch off/unplug wight when it turns off, but I say that the best way to go then is to shut it off (via XMB or holding the power button) then wait about 10 minutes while it's in stand-by then unplug/switch off, that should be fine I think, and it' s a great way of saving energy, it might just be a little energy spent every hour or so in stand-by, but keep it up for days, weeks, and it vwill build up to quite a sum.

heh don't like to leave my stuff in stand-by.

honestly it don't matter. Turn it off and save a little bit of electric. Or leave it on.

Maybe when you turn off your system(standby) after a gaming session or whatsoever, the fans may still be running, because the system probably is still hot. So when you turn off your system and then immidiatley unplug it, an thus completeley cutting its power supply, the fans will also stop and the system will cool down alot slower. This may cause problems. Then again, the fans are only there to prevent the systen from OVERHEATING, and the system mostly has an constant temperature, and when you turn it off, it wont overheat (unless you throw it in mount doom. Frodo! Go on!). But i dont know if the fans keep running when you switch the system on standby. I'll have a look on it:P.

There shouldn't be any problem with unplugging it, but its unnecessary. Like others have said, get a surge protector if you're worried about storms. Other than that I see no reason why you would need to unplug it every time, but again, there shouldn't be any problem with you doing so.

What? why would you unplug it? Do you unplug your TV when your not using it? Leave it plugged in, unless their is a rain storm or something and you think the power may go out.

the fans don't stay on when you shut it down into standby mode, i don't know where people are getting this from.

Keep it plugged in or otherwise while you sleep, the PS3 snatching goblins will come into your house and easily steal your PS3. Their poor motor skills inhibit them from unplugging the console.

Unless you're going away for two weeks or more and know your PS3 won't be used - then go ahead and unplugged it.

Otherwise - No. ;)
