I'm playing a round of deathmatch right now in R2 and I just reflected upon why I love the online portion of this game so much - its fun, action-packed, and lag-free! And I thought to myself, I wish all game developers knew how to do this. Playing lag-free 24/7 would be great.

Should Insomniac share their secret? Part of what makes their games great is that the online play is lag-free. Should they take away that spotlight to improve online gaming as a whole?

Is it really the developer's fault if there is lag, or the player's connection?

It can be both. I think developers can do more to avoid huge problems with a player who has a bad connection. Games like R2 do a better job than a game like MGO let's say. I'd say it would be a benefit to share, but chances are it's not something you can really just show to someone, probably has a lot to do with the coding and how cleanly they do it, or something to that extent.

So it's more like experience, rather than "this is what you're doing, and this is what you should be doing."

And for the record, MGO was horrible..:x

One fateful day, an Insomniac employee during the development of their first online game (R&C: Up Your Arsenal) was shuffling through a lot of books in their secret underground library from the future. By mistake, he happened to come across ancient sorcery in the form of a magical spell book - passed down many generations in Ted Price family bloodline. Inside, they found spells that could produce uncanny results; 654865-player matches, 32153-player co-op, AI programming to out-smart Steven Hawking, and even games that could make the player go back in time. To remain subtle and generally less suspicious, Insomniac only used very basic spells. They started off with some modest ones such as 40-player competitive online for their first Resistance, then bumped it up to 60 - numbers mere mortals found to be quite impressive. Little did they know, Insomniac had much bigger plans...

I love MGO, that's not what I'm getting at here :P. And it's not even so much experience, I think that Insomniac just does a better job than other devs at coding it so that it is capable of running with lag free online/hidden lag online. I don't know if it's really something that can be taught, it's more of a lazy/non-lazy thing. I really don't know this for a fact, I'm just guessing here, it is possible that Insomniac right now holds the holy grail to the internet not lagging and they are just holding out on the rest of the world :P.

It's called dedicated servers. Another big shooter on another console from the holiday season did not have them. And neither did COD: WAW. More games should have them.

Personally, I dig Warhawk's server clusters:

warhawk

It's another game that has practically no lag, despite lots of things happening on the screen.

But yeah, it's all about having dedicated servers and good player connections.

To be honest ... we played the first resistance (40 players online) with no lag on a 26.6 kbps service ... not even full dial up ... and things were alright ... It was at my friends house who's normally overseas for like 8 months of the year and no one else in their family uses internet so they had a slow speed, but when we played it, it was lag free, pretty remarkable!

It's the dedicated servers that make it so smooth. I don't really like R2 online, I like slower paced, tactical games like Gears or SOCOM. But when I just wanna go online and kick some ass then R2 is pretty fun:D

there is not such a secret as insomniac lag free... cuz it has lag... i have seen it, what it change its that the game dont pull you back to where u were standing... but it has lag, and thats cuz of ur internet connection... sometimes cuz of the server... and the multiplayer for me is sooooooooooo boring.... i prefer medal of honor airborne multiplayer (cuz now is almost or completely dead). :'(
