I've always loved the Tekken series, i used to enjoy taking my time to unlock all the characters 1 by 1.

But this bit of news may have compromised me buying the game http://www.videogamer.com/news/unlockables_are_outdated_says_tekken_chief.html

Basically they think that unlockables are old and just want to sell us a basically completed game.

IMO this is a major fail.

Leave comments and tell me what you think of this.

P.S if this was posted earlier sorry i did a search but didn't find anything.

I don't see that as a bad thing at all, and I cannot imagine it being a big enough deal to make you question your decision on whether or not to buy the game.

I personally hate having to replay it over and over and over...and over again, just to unlock characters. I want them right there, available for me to use as I want, when I want. I'm all for unlockables, in fact I encourage including them, just not in regards to characters, but rather new clothes, stages, stage music, etc.

I'm totally fine with this, and, frankly, I'm happy about it.

I have no problem with this, I was never crazy about having to unlock characters.

How would this change anything for you? Its still going to be an awesome game either way.

IMO, it's good they did that. There are some people like me who HATE having to go through so much hassle just to unlock a specific character they want to main. It's a smart move, because when people get the game, they'll want to quickly be re-acquainted with their favourite character, and want to get a good feel for them. I dont want to have to spend hours using characters i absolutely suck with, trying to pull myself through story mode countless times so i can unlock my favourite fighter.

Because there is a Rooster of 40 character, i would just look and think EH what one and then turn it off. They did that with Mortal Kombat: Armageddon but randomly left 4 or 5 characters to unlock and the list was too full to make a choise of character so didn't play it for long.

I for one am also for unlockables and enjoyed playing tekken to get new characters and watch their videos at the end. But the fact that tekken 6 is giving us all the characters doesn't bother me one bit to change my mind in regards to purchasing this game. I just hope the game is well developed and is worth the purchase.

now I am wondering if this game will have a good story at all because they have given no reason to actually play through the story mode. Apparently tekken is all about online play now. hopefully this online wont be laggy like soul calibur 4

Odd decision. But I've been waiting years for Tekken 6, something like that won't put me off.

Actually that, that is an EPIC WIN! Think about the casual gamer, wanting to use a certain character. Okay, now imagine that gamerbeing dissapointed to see that the character is an unlock. Not too bad. But when multiple characters are locked out....BORING!!!

Think of it this way, pretty much all of the Tekken characters are equal in their play because, for the most part, the game is realistic. Only Jenpachi can shoot fireballs that are long range and very damaging. So having all at the start won't bea bother. Now, in say, SFIV, that fit, because you had to work to get some of the more powerful characters. Also in SF, characters had either both or just long or short range attacks, giving certain characters either a big advantage or leaving them a bit of a disadvantage if you didn't know how to focus, dodge, or block while implementing your attack/defensive maneuvers.

What are you talking about? You're not voicing very valid points. The story isn't going to change... If your main incentive to play through story mode is because of unlockable characters, then there is something very wrong with that picture. If you can only supposedly "enjoy" the story, simply because you will be able to unlock things in the end, then you really never HAD any reason to play through the story mode at all in a sense. The Tekken story line has always been amazing, and that is one of the biggest things the series has been recognized for. And i'm sure that 6 will be just as epic as the others. There still is PLENTY of motivation to explore the backstory behind different characters in the upcoming tournament, and find out what happens overall in regards to main plot.

I am saying that unlocking characters was one of the key points to the story. they are diverting attention from story to the online mode. usually games that focus on their online component are weak in the single player mode. maybe they are not putting effort into the story anymore. arent they the developers of soul calibur. Look at soul calibur 4's story. how many years did we wait for those 15 second endings.

I dont understand how unlocking characters is a key point to the story, so enlighten me. If you read the complete article, they said that the concept of unlocking characters was meant to extend longetivity in arcade consoles. They were there as a little extra to begin with. Unlockable characters have no significance to the story. The story will stay the same, and like i said before, the Tekken series has always had awesome stories, and Tekken 6 wont be an exception, simply because unlockable characters are gone. In addition, i really wouldnt call it "diverting attention" either. Perhaps they did it because it was a nice convenience for the consumer as well.

While I personally would rather have to unlock the characters, this by no means does anything at all to change my mind about buying it day one.

EDIT: After more thinking on the subject, I'm glad they made it this way. Mostly because of the huge roster of 40 characters. My guy is Steve Fox, and if for whatever reason I'd have to beat the game 20+ times in order to play as him, it wouldn't be so fun.

I think you should keep unlockable characters in a game if the roster is smaller, though.

Nothing pisses me off more than having to unlock. "Hey guys! Wanna come over for a few drinks and some Tekken 6?! I just got the game a few minutes ago!" "OH HELLS YES! we'll be right there!" "Oh man, this is going to be aweso- what the hell, we can only pick from 4 characters?"

This. With so many characters its just way easier and free. Plus you get to explore more of the game, not too time consuming,

I agree I think this is giving people an easy way out. Online gets old after awhile and with nothing else to do, other than play tekken force the one time through. Getting costumes is nice but where is the real meat to the unlockables if all the characters are there. 60 dollars for a game that is basically beat is a little lame.

[QUOTE="King9999"]Some people here seem to miss the point of a fighting game.mep69
Yep

I play fighting games to fight, not to slave away just to unlock characters.

As someone who's been playing fighting games since the early 80s, this really doesn't bother me at all. I'm used to how things are done, but I'm still glad that I won't have to spend a ton of time playing with characters I may not want to play with just to unlock characters. Now I can play with who I want to play with when I feel like it. That sounds great to me, and, judging by the responses I see here, and at numerous other places, I'm in the majority.

In regards to missing the point of a fighting game, the last time I checked the point of a fighting game was to fight. How does allowing you to use who you want when you want change that? It doesn't. Period.

If you hate this so much that it will ruin the game for you, well, that's your business. While some are busy sulking over this news, I'll be having a great time kicking ass in story mode with my new arcade stick that comes with the LE.

You still have reason to play through the story with that character by unlocking their ending.

I was always disapointed playing tekken at a friends place only to find out he didnt unlock all the characters.

its better than trying to unlock all the different coloured costumes or taunts for each character, when they should already be available. *cough* capcom *cough* sfiv *cough*. thats just stupid.

Exactly plus playing acade mode over and over to unlock characters is gonna be boring. It was hard unlocking the characters in Tekken 5 because of Jinpachi.

i love to unlock them as it makes me play characters i wouldnt normally play but its understandable if its 40 characters. there better be like a frigging gold trophy for completeing each characters story mode, could take you a good hour to do one playthrough, so 40 hours? idk lol

Doesn't bother me. I don't mind unlocking a few characters, but SFIV just went silly with the conditions you had to meet to unlock certain characters. I'd rather just have them all from the start than have to go through all that.

Hmm, this is rather suprising. Perhaps they could have had at least a few of the more miscellaneous characters be unlockable while keeping the more useful ones open. I never really used Roger or any of the Jacks..

I have absolutely no problem with all the characters being unlocked from the beginning, I reckon Namco made the right decision. I'm sure there will be tons of unlockables in the game but am so glad it's not the characters. I'm literally drooling over Tekken 6, that's how much of a fan I am. I can't wait to get my hands on the game and play with all my fav characters, for the 1st time in current gen :D

What else are they going to have be unlockable if not characters? Tekken force might be cool once or twice but then what are you going to do when online gets old? Unlocking outfits or nicknacks to purchase in the game store isn't enough to warrant the full 60 dollars. If the online is going to be barebones with only 1 on 1 and no tag matches this is going to be a complete bust. Either way I won't be getting this on Launch day and I will be buying better games like Ratchet, Uncharted, and Demon Souls instead. Those games won't just hand things over to you. Oh well all the games belong to the new casual market these days anyway so why I amsurprised. Nobody understands the value of a job well done anymore so who cares.

Uh, he's right, it is outdated.

The point of it was the add longevity. Now with online, there's more people to play against than your occasional friend coming over (unless both of you were diehard fans of the same franchise, it's not like you were going to play everyday) and the CPU. Now there's online.

I haven't bothered going out of my way to unlock anyone in Street Fighter IV. It's unnecessary. Fighting games is the most skill required genre. I would rather compete against other actual humans instead of wasting my time trying to unlock people I'll probably never use.

Well, i love to unlock features, costumes, characters, stages, etc, so yeah, this is a bad thing, but nothing to serious, as long as the game is good and delivers a fine experience single player and multiplayer i'm sold.

That's actually a good thing. It's unfair to play through the game millions of times to slowly unlock characters. Also, I hate being forced to fight the same over-powered boss, it only adds stress.

A game like Tekken should have unlockables IMO. It's part of the fun. I just got Marvel vs Capcom 2 last week and while it's a blast, I would have preferred it if they didn't give you all the characters from the start. It makes the roster list overwhelming for beginners and takes away the sense of accomplishment, giving you one less thing to work for.

Nah, this is great news. Especially for someone (like me) who doesn't like things "locked" in the games you play. Some of us just want to play and not feel "forced" to fight a cheap god boss 30 times to get rid of that "locked question mark".

What I dislike about the reasoning is that its because they expect people to play online forever or something. As long as there is still unlockable stuff aside form characters then I don't have a problem with it.
