So, SH:BoM demo came along. I didn't expect this at all. I downloaded it and fired it up, not expecting much tbh (like most others I assume). The game.. tries to be Silent Hill. I mean, it has the various monsters, it has some sort of typical SH story, the usual sounds, the flashlight, Valtiel, puzzles, music and so on. What it doesn't have, however, is the scare factor, like, at all. it might be somewhat apparent later on in the full game, but certainly not in the demo. It also felt as if the developers tried to hard making this a true SH game. I mean, Valtielt is suddenly this supporting figure who gives you rare items and is super upfront? - He was always just sort of there in the true SH games, but only if you cared to notice him. now he's suddenly rather in your face. The puzzle are mostly pieces gathered by doing various challenges, killing monsters followed up by doing some sort of mini game by the end of the level (or zone as it's called). It just didn't feel right. I didn't feel as if I was suddenly getting some sort of random clue or piece of puzzle due to the fact that all I had to do was kill monsters in a challenge.
With that said I actually thoroughly enjoyed the actual gameplay. The game might not have felt like Silent Hill at all, but overall I could see myself picking the game up. Especially if there is no framrate drop when playing co-op. Oh and the graphics weren't as horrible as I had feared. The story and voice actors (from what I played) was though. it didn't feel Silen Hill-ish, just sort of lame.
So yeah.. It does sound rather awful, huh? Although I do admit it's not that bad, however, I can easily see gamespot giving this a 6 or maybe 6.5/10.
I'd say, if you can look past the fact that it has Silent Hill slapped on it and you crave a Dungeon Crawler you'd be fine. The story is probably rather so-so in the full game, but so are most other dungeon crawler stories. These games are about fvcking sh1t up, getting new gear and finding rare artifacts while leveling up. Something which this game does, along with co-op.
The game is set to release next month.
