The Sixaxis controller seems to have finally overstayed its welcome as it appears the controller will be discontinued with the release of the DualShock 3. It won't come as a surprise to most of us that Sony will decide to no longer manufacture this product in light of the mass production of their new rumble-enhanced version that is set to release in North America shortly.

A Sony representative shared the following:

"Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it's completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe)."

Once the DualShock 3 becomes the standard, we could assume that the Sixaxis would then become a really cheap alternative in order to add a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th controller to your setup. Chances are as gamers replace theirs with the DS3, you'll likely be able to find the old and tired Sixaxis available on eBay for a bargain price.

anyone could see this happening..

if they sell them off cheap they will be good as 2nd.3rd controllers but its not likely they will go any cheaper than there normal selling price.

Well gee I could've predicted this happening from a mile away. When the DS3 comes out, who's gonna buy the wimpy Sixaxis when for $5 more they can buy the hefty Dualshock 3?

Meaning Rest In Pieces. I just hope that they'll drop the price on the DS3 once it's gone... $50 is already too much for a controller, and $55 is even worse.

No, foolish is spending more money on a heavier controller with a shorter battery life.

Right now with the list of games its compatible with, the 55 dollars is not worth it. In my collection it would only with 3 out of 7. I hope that its compatible with GTA4, MGS4 and Haze and everything else thats coming out, or ill just keep my sixaxis, I have already gotten used to the adsence of the vibrator

sorry for noob question I have not been following the Dualshock 3 news

i know the new controller has rumble duh but no more motion control correct or am i wrong? To me personally I got used to no rumble in hands. Besides I have one of those boom chairs ( this one http://www.boomchair.com/prod_FRG.htm) IMHO I like it better than a rumble controller

Well even is the SIXAXIS was discontinued...It wouldnt be the end of the world.

There are sometimes when it's cool, though most games dont use it much.

Besides sometimes it can be annoying (like lasering the walls in R&C).

the sixaxis was a nice thoght, but it just never got the correct implementation nor was it well made (too freakin sensitive). All i can say now is that: it will not be missed.

Funny thing, i was thinking earlier today that the sixaxis is gonna get dumped; kind of a nice coincidence.

I thought lasering the walls was pretty cool. I didn't have any trouble doing I think that game has tight sixaxis control. I think the reason why people hate it is because they are used to having to turn the controller hard or push aggressively to get to go right and you don't have to do that with R and C, so everyone hates it because it is overly sensitive.

Anyway It is probably saving them money in the long run because they don't have to produce two types of controllers anymore. Everything that is in the old one is in the new one, so why make both. I never used rumble anyway and I would rather people try to use the sixaxis more and do it well.

The fact that the DS3 may have a shorter battery life dones't concern me. My couch isn't too far from the TV, so the short recharge chord isn't a massive hassle if I need to power up my controller (what I would suggest is make the recharge chord longer so this doesn't become a problem to anyone). Plus, the DS3 has the excellent rumble and motion capabilities and is only a little bit more expensive (last time I checked), so I think this is a positive step. Go Sony!

Sounds good to me, I was planning to get two DS3 controllers anyway. I miss the heavy grip and rumble feature. Once the time goes by the price will drop to more affordable 30-40$.

As of right now 55$ is a little bit pricey, but it's a new unit. Even though I believe Sony should had shipped DS3 in the beginning when the console was announced and not makes us buy a new one year later. It's still an option though, new PS3 owners will already have DS3 included anyway. 8)

Either way, I want one, so that won't stop me from buying it. :)

I'm sorry, but rumble is a little overrated. Its a nice thing but it doesn't make or break a game. I don't see the point in spending 50 or more on a controller when I can buy a game for a little more. Sixaxis was just a filler till they could make the DS3 and it got the job done for the short term. The problem wasn't the controller, but the way it was used in most games. Lets hope the next round of games take better advantage of it rather then use it to hinder the gameplay *cough* Lair....

The battery life is the exact same on both controllers. When I first got my white dualshock 3 from japan I played coop with my brother using a sixaxis both fully charged and his controller died 45 minutes before my dualshock.

I find it funny how everyone is excited about the DS3, I dont know why people likes a controllers that vibrates, IMO that feature is anoying, I always turn off the vibration.

Dont tell me that when you fell the controller rumble, it makes you have a more vivid expirience... ROFLMAO

Exactly. It is still the same Sixaxis controller with motion sensing just now has the addition of rumble and instead of being labled the 'Sixaxis' controller.. will be called the Dualshock 3. Not sure how else to explain it. It has been stated many times in the thread and more posts are made about how the sixaxis motion was dumb anyway... but it is still there and not going away.

The DS3 is something some of us really can live without and the some of us it really doesn't make a difference while there are some of us that thinks it's nessasry for the games. But the thing is that the sixaxis is still going to be in every controller. Personally I would rather just have the sixaxis without the rumble.
